Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Crash on U.S. 41 in Manatee County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic crash in Manatee County, Florida has left a pedestrian dead after being struck by an SUV in the early morning hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 1:20 a.m. on May 6, 2026, at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Scale Avenue.

Authorities report:

  • A 27-year-old woman from Sarasota was driving a 2008 Cadillac Escalade
  • A 43-year-old man from Palmetto was traveling on foot in the area
  • The vehicle struck the pedestrian at the intersection

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not injured.

Pedestrian Crashes at Night: A Known Risk

Crashes involving pedestrians during late-night or early morning hours are particularly dangerous due to:

  • Reduced visibility
  • Limited lighting at intersections
  • Driver fatigue or reduced reaction time

Even in marked or familiar roadways, these factors can significantly increase the risk of fatal outcomes.

Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

While the exact cause of this crash remains under investigation, pedestrian accidents often involve:

  • Failure to yield to pedestrians
  • Speeding or distracted driving
  • Pedestrians crossing outside designated crosswalks
  • Poor visibility conditions

Investigators will work to determine what factors contributed to this incident.

In vehicle versus pedestrian crashes, determining liability depends on several factors, including:

  • Whether the driver exercised reasonable care
  • Whether the pedestrian had the right of way
  • Road design, lighting, and signage conditions

Even if a pedestrian is partially at fault, drivers still have a duty to remain alert and avoid collisions when possible.

Wrongful Death Claims

When a pedestrian is killed due to negligence, surviving family members may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim.

Compensation may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of financial support
  • Emotional pain and suffering

Each case depends on the findings of the investigation and applicable Florida law.

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and has not yet released additional details regarding contributing factors.
