Pedestrian Killed After Pickup Truck Leaves I-95 and Crashes Onto Lem Turner Road in Jacksonville

A pedestrian was killed Sunday evening after a pickup truck left Interstate 95, traveled down an embankment and crashed onto Lem Turner Road in Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The unusual crash left the 45-year-old pickup driver with minor injuries and has raised concerns about pedestrian safety along the roadway. Authorities have not yet determined why the truck left the interstate.

What Happened in the Fatal Jacksonville Crash?

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 7 p.m. on August 9, 2026.

A pickup truck was traveling northbound on I-95 when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the interstate.

The truck then:

• Traveled off the roadway.
• Went down an embankment separating I-95 from Lem Turner Road.
• Entered the area of Lem Turner Road.
• Struck a man who was walking on the sidewalk.

The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

FHP has not publicly identified the victim.

Witness Says She and Her Son Were Seconds From the Crash

Witness Reanna Jackson told News4JAX that she was driving with her son when the truck came off the interstate directly in front of them.

Jackson said she was forced to brake as debris scattered around the crash scene. She described being only seconds away from potentially becoming involved herself.

In the days following the collision, Jackson said the experience continued to affect both her and her son, particularly because they witnessed the pedestrian’s death.

Her account could also become important to investigators as they attempt to reconstruct the truck’s movements immediately before and after it left I-95.

Pickup Driver Suffered Minor Injuries

FHP identified the pickup driver only as a 45-year-old man from Fernandina Beach.

He suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Troopers have not announced whether the driver was transported to a hospital or whether any citations or charges are being considered.

Most importantly, authorities have not yet explained why the pickup left I-95.

The crash remains under investigation.
