Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck by Vehicle on U.S. 1 in St. Lucie County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 36-year-old Florida man died after being struck by a vehicle late Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 1 in St. Lucie County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred just before midnight near North Third Street and involved a pedestrian who was reportedly walking in a travel lane when he was hit by a northbound vehicle. Authorities say a second vehicle also struck the victim before leaving the area.

The incident remains under active investigation.

What We Know About the Fatal Pedestrian Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at approximately 11:57 p.m. on June 17.

Investigators reported that:

  • A 60-year-old Vero Beach man was driving a 2020 Toyota Prius northbound on U.S. 1
  • The crash occurred near North Third Street in St. Lucie County
  • A 36-year-old man from Hobe Sound was walking southbound in the northbound outside travel lane
  • The pedestrian remained in the roadway as the Toyota approached
  • The Prius struck the pedestrian

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after the collision occurred.

Pedestrian Sustained Fatal Injuries

According to the Florida Highway Patrol:

  • The impact threw the pedestrian onto the hood of the Toyota
  • The victim then struck the windshield
  • He subsequently rolled off the vehicle onto the roadway

Authorities later confirmed that the pedestrian died from injuries sustained in the crash.

His identity has not yet been publicly released.

Second Vehicle Also Involved

Investigators reported that a second vehicle became involved after the initial collision.

According to troopers:

  • A second northbound vehicle drove over the victim’s legs after the initial impact
  • The vehicle continued northbound
  • Authorities have not publicly identified the driver or vehicle involved

It remains unclear whether investigators have located the second vehicle.

The circumstances surrounding the second collision continue to be reviewed.

Pedestrian Accidents Remain a Serious Concern in Florida

Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the country.

Pedestrian crashes often occur:

  • Along major highways
  • During nighttime hours
  • In areas with limited lighting
  • When pedestrians are traveling in or near active travel lanes

Because pedestrians have little protection against the force of a moving vehicle, these collisions frequently result in catastrophic or fatal injuries.

Nighttime Conditions Can Increase Risks

The collision occurred just before midnight, when visibility is often significantly reduced.

Nighttime pedestrian accidents may involve factors such as:

  • Reduced driver visibility
  • Dark clothing
  • Limited roadway illumination
  • Increased reaction times
  • Driver fatigue

Investigators frequently evaluate lighting conditions and visibility as part of pedestrian crash investigations.

Serious Injuries Commonly Occur in Pedestrian Collisions

Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer severe injuries due to the direct force of impact.

Common injuries include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage
  • Multiple fractures
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Severe soft tissue trauma

The risk of fatal injury increases significantly when crashes occur at highway speeds.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Investigators may review:

  • Witness statements
  • Vehicle damage
  • Roadway evidence
  • Traffic camera footage
  • Lighting and visibility conditions
  • Information related to the second vehicle involved

Authorities have not announced whether any charges or citations are expected.

Determining Liability in Pedestrian Accidents

Fatal pedestrian crashes often require detailed investigations to determine exactly how the incident occurred.

Investigators typically examine:

  • The pedestrian’s location before impact
  • Driver actions
  • Roadway conditions
  • Visibility
  • Vehicle speeds
  • Potential contributing factors

A thorough review of all available evidence is necessary before final conclusions can be reached.

The Human Cost Behind Fatal Pedestrian Crashes

Behind every traffic fatality is a family coping with a sudden and devastating loss.

The death of a 36-year-old man leaves loved ones facing grief, unanswered questions, and the difficult process of moving forward after an unexpected tragedy.

For many families, understanding the circumstances surrounding a fatal accident becomes an important part of finding closure.

Remembering a Life Lost

The fatal pedestrian crash on U.S. 1 serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers that exist on Florida roadways, particularly during nighttime hours.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

As the Florida Highway Patrol continues its investigation, additional details may emerge regarding the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking loss.
