Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck by Brightline Train in Fort Lauderdale

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by a train in Fort Lauderdale, according to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

The fatal incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on March 8 near the 700 block of North Andrews Avenue, where officers responded to reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a train operated by Brightline.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports that a Brightline train had struck a pedestrian along the rail corridor near North Andrews Avenue.

When officers arrived, they located the individual who had been struck by the train.

Emergency responders determined that the victim had died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the pedestrian.

Police secured the area while investigators documented the scene and worked to determine what occurred. Officials later confirmed that the scene was cleared and train service resumed after the initial investigation. Brightline trains continue to operate along the corridor connecting Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando.

Pedestrian Safety Around Railroad Tracks

Railroad tracks and train corridors can be extremely dangerous areas for pedestrians.

Trains travel at high speeds and require significant distance to come to a complete stop.

Common factors in train-related pedestrian fatalities include:

  • Trespassing on railroad tracks
  • Attempting to cross tracks outside designated crossings
  • Limited visibility at night
  • Distracted walking near train corridors
  • Impairment or fatigue

Because trains cannot stop quickly, individuals on or near tracks may have little time to react if a train is approaching.

While many train-related pedestrian incidents involve individuals being on the tracks, investigators typically examine multiple factors when determining liability.

Authorities may review:

  • Train operator actions and warning signals
  • Visibility and lighting conditions near the tracks
  • Crossing signals and safety barriers
  • Surveillance or rail corridor cameras
  • Witness statements and train data recordings

In some cases, liability may arise if rail crossings lack proper safety warnings or if operational negligence contributed to the incident.

Families affected by fatal accidents may have the right to explore legal options depending on the circumstances.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department continues to investigate the fatal train collision involving a pedestrian and a Brightline train near North Andrews Avenue.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the crash.
