Passenger Killed After Left-Turn Crash With Pickup Truck in Boynton Beach
A woman was killed and another critically injured following a two-vehicle crash Sunday night in Boynton Beach, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
The collision occurred around 8:15 p.m. on March 8 at the intersection of Flavor Pict Road and Via Valenza.
Authorities say the crash involved a 2020 Honda CR-V and a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.
According to investigators, the Honda CR-V was traveling eastbound on Flavor Pict Road when the driver attempted to make a left turn onto Via Valenza.
Troopers say the driver, an 87-year-old Boynton Beach woman, turned into the path of an oncoming Toyota Tacoma traveling westbound.
The Tacoma struck the passenger side of the Honda, causing the vehicle to spin before coming to rest in the westbound lane.
The crash involved four occupants inside the Honda CR-V.
Authorities say an 83-year-old woman seated in the left rear passenger seat of the Honda suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
She was pronounced dead at 9:02 p.m., according to investigators.
Another passenger, an 88-year-old woman seated in the front passenger seat, sustained critical, life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Honda and another passenger, an 89-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.
Emergency responders from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue transported all occupants involved in the crash to Delray Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma, a 61-year-old man from Delray Beach, suffered minor injuries. Investigators noted he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Crashes involving left-turning vehicles are among the most common types of serious intersection accidents.
These collisions often occur when drivers attempt to turn across oncoming traffic and misjudge the speed or distance of approaching vehicles.
Factors that can contribute to left-turn crashes include:
- Failure to yield the right of way
- Limited visibility at intersections
- Distracted driving
- Speeding vehicles approaching the intersection
- Poor lighting or roadway design
Because the turning vehicle often exposes its side to oncoming traffic, these collisions frequently result in serious injuries for passengers.
Potential Legal Liability in Intersection Crashes
Determining fault in intersection collisions typically requires a detailed investigation.
Authorities may analyze several types of evidence, including:
- Crash reconstruction analysis
- Vehicle damage patterns and impact points
- Traffic camera or surveillance footage
- Witness statements
- Traffic signal timing or roadway design issues
Under Florida law, drivers making left turns are generally required to yield to oncoming traffic, but investigators must evaluate all contributing factors to determine liability.
When a crash results in death or serious injuries, victims and their families may have the right to pursue compensation through personal injury or wrongful death claims.
