Passenger Identified in Deadly High-Speed Crash in Fort Pierce That Left Two Drivers Critically Injured
A violent high-speed crash in Fort Pierce has claimed the life of a 58-year-old man and left two others critically injured, according to local authorities.
The collision, which occurred late Friday night near Indian River State College, remains under active investigation as police work to determine what led to the devastating impact.
According to the Fort Pierce Police Department, officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. on February 20, 2026, to the intersection of Virginia Avenue and South 35th Street for reports of a serious two-vehicle crash.
When officers arrived, they found two heavily damaged vehicles and multiple victims suffering from severe injuries.
Investigators later identified the deceased passenger as Timothy A. Ecker, 58, of Fort Pierce.
Police say the crash involved:
- A Chevrolet Silverado attempting to turn left from Virginia Avenue onto South 35th Street
- A Dodge Charger traveling eastbound on Virginia Avenue at a high rate of speed
According to investigators, the Dodge Charger struck the Silverado as it was turning. The force of the collision was so severe that Ecker, who was riding as a passenger in the Silverado, was ejected from the vehicle.
He was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital with critical injuries but later succumbed to those injuries.
Both drivers involved in the crash were also transported to Lawnwood Hospital and remain in serious condition, according to police.
Fort Pierce Police detectives are continuing to investigate all factors that may have contributed to the crash, including:
- Vehicle speed
- Right-of-way and turning conditions
- Possible driver impairment or distraction
- Roadway and traffic conditions
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or may have information to contact the Fort Pierce Police Department or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers.
Dangers of High-Speed Collisions
Crashes involving excessive speed are among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle accidents. High-speed impacts dramatically increase the likelihood of:
- Vehicle rollovers or ejections
- Catastrophic injuries
- Multi-victim trauma
- Fatal outcomes
Passengers are especially vulnerable in high-speed crashes, particularly when a collision occurs during a turning maneuver or at an intersection.
Legal Considerations After a Fatal Crash
When a passenger is killed in a crash, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim depending on the circumstances. Liability may extend to:
- A speeding or negligent driver
- A driver who failed to yield
- Multiple drivers in shared-fault scenarios
- Other third parties whose actions contributed to the collision
A thorough investigation can help determine responsibility and whether negligence played a role in the fatal outcome.
