Panama City Motorcyclist Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash on County Road 389 in Bay County
A 33-year-old Panama City man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle, an SUV, and a passenger vehicle on County Road 389 in Bay County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision remains under investigation as troopers work to determine the events leading up to the crash.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred during the afternoon of July 15, 2026, on County Road 389 near the intersection of Cason Drive.
Investigators reported that:
- A gray Suzuki motorcycle and a silver Kia Soul were traveling southbound on County Road 389.
- The motorcycle collided with the rear of the Kia Soul.
- The impact caused the motorcycle to cross into the northbound lane.
- The motorcycle then collided with an oncoming white Chevrolet Tahoe traveling north.
The 33-year-old motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries.
Deputies with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office immediately began life-saving measures until Bay County Fire Rescue arrived. Despite those efforts, the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
The drivers of the Kia Soul and Chevrolet Tahoe, as well as a 14-year-old passenger in the Tahoe, were not injured.
The roadway has since reopened.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
While the preliminary investigation indicates the motorcycle struck the rear of the Kia before entering the opposite lane, investigators will continue examining all available evidence before reaching a final conclusion regarding the cause of the collision.
As part of the investigation, troopers may review:
- Vehicle speeds.
- Following distance between the motorcycle and Kia.
- Roadway conditions.
- Visibility and weather conditions.
- Witness statements.
- Physical evidence from the crash scene.
- Vehicle damage patterns.
- Any available surveillance or dash camera footage.
A complete accident reconstruction will help investigators determine exactly how the collision unfolded.
Rear-End Motorcycle Collisions Can Become Catastrophic
Motorcycles are particularly vulnerable during rear-end collisions because even a relatively minor impact can cause a rider to lose control.
When a motorcycle is thrown into opposing traffic, the risk of fatal injuries increases dramatically due to the possibility of secondary collisions with oncoming vehicles.
Although preliminary reports describe how the crash occurred, determining why it occurred often requires a much more detailed investigation.
Potential Legal Options Following a Fatal Motorcycle Accident
Every fatal motorcycle crash should be thoroughly investigated before legal responsibility is determined.
While preliminary reports indicate the motorcycle struck the rear of another vehicle, initial findings do not necessarily resolve every question surrounding liability. Investigators may still evaluate whether additional factors contributed to the collision.
Depending on the evidence, investigators may consider issues such as:
- Sudden or unexpected braking.
- Unsafe lane changes.
- Mechanical failures.
- Road hazards or roadway defects.
- Visibility issues.
- Actions of multiple drivers before the collision.
If another party’s negligence contributed to the crash, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).
Potentially liable parties could include:
- Another negligent driver.
- A commercial entity, if applicable.
- A vehicle manufacturer if a defective component contributed to the crash.
- A maintenance provider.
- A government entity responsible for dangerous roadway conditions, when permitted under Florida law.
If liability is established, eligible surviving family members may be able to recover compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses.
- Medical expenses incurred before death.
- Loss of financial support and future earnings.
- Loss of companionship and guidance.
- Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.
- Other damages available under Florida law.
Every fatal crash is unique, and liability depends on the specific facts established during the investigation.
Preserving Evidence Is Essential
Evidence collected immediately after a fatal motorcycle crash can be critical to understanding exactly what occurred.
Important evidence may include:
- Crash scene photographs.
- Surveillance or traffic camera footage.
- Witness statements.
- Motorcycle inspection records.
- Vehicle event data, when available.
- Accident reconstruction reports.
- Police reports.
- Physical evidence from the roadway.
Prompt preservation of this evidence can help ensure investigators and families have a complete understanding of the events leading to the collision.
