The Dangers of Stop Sign Violations
Failure to obey traffic control devices, such as stop signs, is a leading cause of intersection crashes.
Common risks include:
- Entering intersections without yielding
- Misjudging other vehicles’ speed or distance
- Reduced reaction time for other drivers
- High-impact side or front-end collisions
Even at moderate speeds, intersection crashes can result in severe or fatal injuries.
Legal Considerations in Intersection Crashes
Crashes involving stop sign violations often center on right-of-way rules and driver responsibility.
Investigators may examine:
- Whether the stop sign was properly observed
- Visibility at the intersection
- Speed and actions of both drivers
- Potential contributing factors such as distraction or impairment
Liability is typically determined based on which driver failed to follow traffic laws.
Wrongful Death and Injury Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation when negligence contributes to a fatal crash.
Injury victims may also pursue compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Ongoing care and rehabilitation
Cases involving both fatal and serious injuries often require detailed investigation.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and determine all contributing factors.
