Palm Beach County Nurse Arrested on Sexual Battery Charges, Detectives Seek Additional Victims

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A nurse in Palm Beach County has been arrested after being accused of sexually assaulting two women at a medical facility, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and detectives believe there may be additional victims.

The suspect, Joel Vega, 34, has been charged with two counts of sexual battery, according to law enforcement officials.

Deputies say Vega was employed as a recovery room nurse at Palms Wellington Surgical Center at the time of the alleged incidents.

The arrest followed an investigation launched after two separate complaints were made to authorities.

Investigation Details

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office:

  • Detectives received two reports alleging sexual battery
  • Investigators conducted interviews and gathered evidence
  • Law enforcement determined there was probable cause to support the allegations
  • Vega was arrested on Friday

Authorities have not released specific details about the alleged incidents, including when they occurred.

Detectives have stated they believe there may be additional victims and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

Sexual Assault in Medical Settings

Allegations of sexual misconduct in healthcare settings are especially serious because medical professionals are placed in positions of trust. Patients in surgical and recovery environments are often in vulnerable physical and emotional states.

When sexual misconduct occurs in a healthcare setting, potential legal issues can include:

  • Criminal prosecution of the accused
  • Civil claims against the individual
  • Potential liability for the medical facility
  • Licensing investigations by regulatory boards

Healthcare providers have a legal and ethical duty to protect patients from harm.

Survivors of sexual assault may have the right to pursue civil claims in addition to any criminal case filed by prosecutors. A civil case can seek compensation for:

  • Emotional trauma
  • Medical and psychological treatment
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of dignity and trust
  • Other damages permitted under Florida law

In some cases, facilities may also face liability if negligent hiring, supervision, or failure to conduct proper background checks contributed to the misconduct.

Encouragement for Potential Victims

Law enforcement officials have indicated that additional victims may exist. Individuals who believe they may have been affected are encouraged to contact authorities directly.

Reporting misconduct can help protect others and may prevent future harm.

Cases involving sexual assault in medical settings require careful, sensitive handling. Survivors deserve compassion, confidentiality, and strong legal advocacy.
