Ormond Woman Injured in Deadly Jeep Crash Dies Six Days Later; Driver Now Faces Two Vehicular Homicide Charges

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic update has emerged following a violent crash along Ocean Shore Boulevard in Ormond-by-the-Sea, as the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed that a 73-year-old woman injured in the collision has died from her injuries — bringing the total fatalities from the wreck to two.

The crash, which occurred on Saturday, November 1, involved a Jeep Wrangler and a 2026 Chevrolet Corvette driven by 63-year-old Scott March of Daytona Beach. FHP investigators say March was speeding in a no-passing zone when he attempted to overtake the Jeep, crashing into it from behind near Sandpiper Ridge Drive around 6:05 p.m.

According to troopers, the impact caused the Jeep Wrangler to overturn, ejecting both the driver — a 72-year-old man from Ohio — and his female passenger, a 73-year-old woman from Ormond Beach.

The driver died at the scene. His passenger was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with critical injuries and remained hospitalized until her death on Thursday, November 6.

March sustained minor injuries and was also taken to Halifax Health. He was arrested on November 3 and initially charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury. Following the woman’s death, FHP announced that the charges have been upgraded to two counts of vehicular homicide.

“The charges against Scott March have now been upgraded to two counts of vehicular homicide,”
said FHP Trooper Migdalisis Garcia in a statement Friday.

March remains in custody without bail at the Volusia County Jail as the investigation continues.

The FHP investigation revealed that March was traveling well above the 45 mph speed limit in his Corvette when he tried to pass the Jeep in a no-passing zone on Ocean Shore Boulevard.

Physical evidence and multiple eyewitness accounts confirmed that March’s reckless maneuver caused the crash. The Corvette slammed into the Jeep’s rear end, overturning it and throwing both occupants onto the roadway.

The Jeep came to rest on its side near the shoulder, while the Corvette sustained major front-end damage.

Under Florida Statute §782.071, vehicular homicide is defined as the killing of a person caused by the reckless operation of a motor vehicle. The offense is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison per count, a $10,000 fine, and the revocation of driving privileges.

If aggravating factors are present — such as excessive speed, illegal passing, or endangering multiple lives — prosecutors may pursue harsher sentencing recommendations.

March’s case could result in a combined sentence exceeding 30 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
