Orlando Man Killed While Riding E-Bike on Oak Ridge Road in Orange County
A late-night traffic collision in Orange County has resulted in the death of a 44-year-old Orlando man who was struck while riding an electric bicycle Thursday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers say the fatal crash occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on West Oak Ridge Road at Harcourt Avenue, just west of Florida’s Turnpike.
According to FHP, a 2016 Kia Optima, driven by a 40-year-old Orlando man, was traveling eastbound on Oak Ridge Road when it struck an e-bike rider who was traveling through the crosswalk.
The e-bike rider suffered critical injuries and was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The Kia driver was not injured and remained at the scene, troopers said.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
As electric bicycles become more common throughout Florida, serious and fatal crashes involving e-bike riders have increased—particularly at intersections and crosswalks.
Although e-bikes are often treated similarly to traditional bicycles under Florida law, riders remain extremely vulnerable in collisions with passenger vehicles. Unlike motorists, e-bike riders have no physical protection against impact forces, making even low-speed crashes potentially fatal.
Common factors in e-bike fatalities include:
- Limited nighttime visibility
- Driver inattention or failure to yield
- Speed and roadway design issues
- Confusion over e-bike right-of-way rules
- Inadequate lighting or signage at crossings
Legal Rights After a Fatal E-Bike Crash
When an e-bike rider is killed, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law—even if the driver stayed at the scene or was not immediately charged.
Liability may depend on:
- Whether the driver failed to yield at a crosswalk
- Vehicle speed and driver attentiveness
- Lighting and visibility conditions
- Roadway design or traffic signal timing
- Whether the e-bike was lawfully operating under Florida statutes
A wrongful death claim may seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Loss of financial support and services
- Mental pain and suffering of surviving family members
A thorough investigation is essential to determine whether the crash was preventable.
