One Person Seriously Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash in Town ’n’ Country; Investigation Ongoing

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A hit-and-run crash at a busy intersection in Town ’n’ Country left one person seriously injured Tuesday evening and prompted a major law enforcement response, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash was reported shortly after 5:00 p.m. at the intersection of Waters Avenue and Sheldon Road, a heavily traveled area during rush hour.

Deputies said the incident involved a hit-and-run, meaning at least one driver fled the scene after the collision. One person involved in the crash sustained serious bodily injuries and required emergency medical attention. The extent of those injuries has not yet been publicly released.

Authorities confirmed that one individual has been detained in connection with the crash as the investigation continues.

Due to the severity of the incident, deputies urged drivers to use alternate routes and warned of traffic delays. By approximately 7:00 p.m., the roadway had been cleared and traffic was restored.

Hit-and-run crashes are treated as serious criminal offenses in Florida—particularly when they result in serious injury or death. Leaving the scene denies injured victims immediate help and can dramatically worsen injuries.

Common reasons drivers flee include:

  • Driving without a valid license
  • Lack of insurance
  • Intoxication or impairment
  • Outstanding warrants or fear of arrest

Under Florida law, drivers involved in a crash causing injury are legally required to stop, render aid, and remain at the scene.

Even while a criminal investigation is ongoing, injured victims may have civil legal options to pursue compensation for their injuries and losses.

Depending on the circumstances, a victim may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospitalization
  • Ongoing medical care and rehabilitation
  • Lost income and reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Permanent disability or disfigurement

If the at-fault driver fled the scene or lacks insurance, additional options may include:

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) claims
  • Claims against vehicle owners who allowed negligent drivers to operate their car
  • Potential claims involving roadway design or traffic control failures

Law enforcement investigations focus on criminal responsibility—not on securing compensation for injured victims. An independent legal investigation can help preserve critical evidence such as:

  • Traffic camera or nearby surveillance footage
  • Vehicle damage analysis
  • Witness statements
  • Phone records or GPS data
  • Insurance coverage details

This information can be essential in hit-and-run cases, especially when liability is disputed.
