One Killed, Two Injured in Butler Boulevard Crash in Jacksonville

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A fatal single-vehicle crash on Butler Boulevard in Jacksonville claimed the life of one man and left two others injured Saturday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred at approximately 9:54 p.m. near Interstate 295, when a 23-year-old driver from Green Cove Springs was traveling eastbound on Butler Boulevard during heavy rain. Investigators reported that the driver lost control of the sedan on the wet roadway. The vehicle skidded onto the shoulder and struck a tree.

A 22-year-old front-seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger, a 23-year-old from Jacksonville, sustained minor injuries and were treated by emergency responders.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Rain-related crashes are a leading cause of serious and fatal accidents in Florida. Wet pavement reduces tire traction and increases stopping distances, making it more difficult for drivers to maintain control, particularly at higher speeds or on curved roadways.

Loss-of-control crashes often result in severe injuries when vehicles leave the roadway and collide with fixed objects such as trees, utility poles, or guardrails. These impacts can be especially deadly for front-seat passengers due to the force of the collision.

As part of the ongoing investigation, troopers will evaluate several factors, including:

  • Vehicle speed and braking prior to impact
  • Roadway conditions and drainage
  • Whether weather played a significant role
  • Seatbelt use by all occupants
  • Mechanical or tire-related issues
  • Any contributing driver behavior

Even in single-vehicle crashes, multiple factors may contribute to the outcome, and determining the full cause requires a detailed reconstruction.

When a crash results in the loss of life, surviving family members may have rights under the Florida Wrongful Death Act, depending on the circumstances. Potential compensation may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of financial support and services
  • Loss of companionship and guidance
  • Mental pain and suffering

In some cases, liability may extend beyond the driver to include other responsible parties, such as vehicle owners, manufacturers, or entities responsible for unsafe roadway conditions.
