One Killed in Wrong-Way Crash That Shut Down Countyline Road in Miramar
A deadly wrong-way collision shut down both directions of Countyline Road early Monday morning after two vehicles collided head-on, according to the Miramar Police Department and Miami Gardens Police.
Authorities say the crash occurred overnight in the 7000 block of Countyline Road, near the border of Miramar and Miami Gardens. Investigators determined that a 2017 Honda Civic was traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes when it struck a 2020 Tesla Model 3 head-on.
When Miami Gardens police arrived at the scene, they discovered one of the drivers still inside their vehicle. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded shortly after and pronounced that driver dead at the scene.
The second driver was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital with serious injuries. Officials have not yet confirmed which driver survived.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office assisted with aerial surveillance to ensure there were no additional victims or passengers. Video footage from the scene showed both vehicles severely damaged — one of them completely burned — as investigators worked to document evidence across both lanes.
The roadway remained closed between the 6000 and 7400 blocks of Countyline Road for several hours while traffic homicide detectives conducted their investigation.
Wrong-way collisions are among the most violent and deadly types of crashes. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), wrong-way crashes result in fatalities more than 60% of the time, primarily because of the head-on impact at high speeds.
Common causes of wrong-way driving include:
- Impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs
- Driver fatigue or confusion (especially in poorly lit areas)
- Missed or obscured road signage
- Speeding or reckless driving behavior
Under Florida Statute §316.193, driving under the influence that leads to death can result in DUI manslaughter charges, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Even if impairment is not a factor, reckless or negligent driving that results in a fatality may still trigger civil and criminal liability.
Establishing who is at fault in a wrong-way crash typically involves a thorough investigation into:
- Road design and signage visibility
- Driver impairment or distraction
- Speed and braking data from vehicle black boxes
- Toxicology reports and witness statements
If a driver entered the wrong lane due to negligence or recklessness, they — or their estate if deceased — may be held civilly liable for injuries, property damage, or wrongful death.
In some cases, if inadequate signage or poor roadway design contributed to confusion, a government entity or contractor responsible for roadway maintenance may also share liability.
Legal Rights for Victims and Families
Under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (§§768.16–768.26), surviving family members of a person killed in a preventable crash may recover compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs related to the crash
- Loss of companionship and emotional support
- Lost income and future earning potential
- Pain and suffering of surviving family members
Even when the at-fault driver does not survive, claims may still be brought against their insurance or estate.
