One Killed, Four Injured in Clearwater Sports Bar Shooting: What Victims and Families Need to Know About Their Legal Rights

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic shooting outside a popular Clearwater sports bar has left one man dead and four others injured, according to the Clearwater Police Department. The violence unfolded Sunday night in the parking lot of Fuzzy’s Sports Bar & Grill, located at 1270 S. Highland Ave., and has sparked a major investigation into what led to the deadly incident.

Authorities identified 24-year-old Jordan Javontay Walls as the man killed during the shooting. Police say:

  • The shooting occurred in the parking lot
  • Walls died at the scene
  • Four injured victims were later dropped off at Morton Plant Hospital by a private vehicle that immediately fled
  • Detectives believe two suspects, both men dressed in dark clothing, fled the scene after firing shots

Investigators noted that the incident does not appear to be random, and there is no known threat to the wider community at this time. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation.

While criminal investigations focus on identifying and arresting the shooters, victims and families may also have civil legal rights if the shooting could have been prevented through adequate security measures.

Sports bars, nightclubs, lounges, and similar establishments have a legal duty under Florida premises liability laws—specifically the Florida Negligent Security Doctrine—to provide reasonable security when crime is foreseeable.

A property owner may be liable if they:

  • Failed to hire or properly train security
  • Neglected to monitor parking lots or entryways
  • Did not break up fights, disturbances, or escalating conflict
  • Allowed overcrowding or lacked sufficient staff
  • Failed to provide proper lighting or surveillance cameras
  • Had prior incidents of violence and did not increase safety measures

If this shooting occurred due to inadequate safety protocols, victims and families may have a valid negligent security claim.

Who Can Be Held Legally Responsible?

Depending on the facts uncovered during the investigation, several parties may be liable:

1. The Bar or Property Owner

They may be responsible if they failed to implement reasonable security measures—especially if there was a known history of fights, disturbances, or violent crime.

2. The Security Company (If One Was Hired)

If guards failed to patrol, respond, or follow safety protocols.

3. The Shooters Themselves

Even if they are criminally charged, victims can pursue civil wrongful death or injury claims.

4. Additional Third Parties

If the location was leased, managed, or operated by multiple entities, liability may extend beyond the bar alone.

Florida law allows surviving families to seek damages under the Florida Wrongful Death Act, including compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of companionship
  • Mental pain and suffering
  • Lost financial support
  • Medical bills related to lifesaving efforts

Surviving victims may pursue claims for:

  • Medical costs
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost income
  • Long-term disability or trauma

Bar and nightclub shooting cases move quickly. Property owners and insurers often act immediately to protect themselves, which means crucial evidence can disappear without swift intervention.

An experienced negligent security attorney can immediately:

  • Secure surveillance footage
  • Collect witness statements
  • Examine security protocols (or lack thereof)
  • Investigate past incidents at the bar
  • Obtain 911 transcripts, incident reports, and crime data
  • Preserve evidence before it’s altered or destroyed

These details often determine whether victims and families can hold negligent parties accountable.
