One Hospitalized After Car Crashes Into Building on Marco Island: Legal Options & Liability

Flanagan & Bodenheimer

One person was taken to a hospital after a vehicle crashed into the front of a building on Marco Island on Saturday, October 3, according to local authorities.

The crash occurred in a parking lot along North Collier Boulevard and involved a vehicle carrying three people.

Marco Island Police and Fire Rescue responded to the scene and were investigating what caused the vehicle to strike the building.

What Happened in the Marco Island Crash?

According to authorities, the crash happened in the 260 block of North Collier Boulevard on Marco Island.

A vehicle traveling through a parking lot crashed into the front of a building. Officials said the resulting damage to the structure appeared to be minor.

Authorities did not provide additional information about what caused the driver to lose control or how the vehicle ended up striking the building.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remained ongoing.

Three People Were Inside the Vehicle

Police and fire officials said three people were inside the vehicle when the collision occurred.

One occupant was transported to a hospital for further evaluation. The other two occupants were evaluated and treated at the scene before being released.

Officials did not provide additional information about the hospitalized person’s injuries or condition.

No injuries to anyone inside the building were reported in the initial account.

Investigators Working to Determine What Caused the Crash

Emergency crews remained at the scene following the collision while authorities investigated what led to the crash.

The initial report did not identify the driver or indicate whether speed, distraction, impairment, a medical emergency, mechanical failure or another factor contributed to the collision.

Those are among the issues investigators may consider in a vehicle-into-building crash, but there is currently no information establishing that any of those factors played a role in this incident.

Liability When a Vehicle Crashes Into a Building

Crashes involving vehicles leaving normal travel areas and striking buildings can raise several potential liability questions.

Investigators may need to determine why the vehicle left its intended path, whether the driver acted negligently and whether another person or condition contributed to the collision.

If a passenger is injured because of a driver’s negligence, the injured person may have the right to pursue compensation depending on the circumstances of the accident and the insurance coverage available.

Property owners may also have claims for damage caused to a building or other structures.

However, liability cannot be determined from the initial information released about the Marco Island crash. Authorities were still investigating its cause.

What Compensation May Be Available After a Florida Car Accident?

People injured in Florida motor vehicle crashes may have several potential sources of insurance coverage.

Florida’s no-fault insurance system generally requires drivers to carry Personal Injury Protection coverage, commonly known as PIP. Depending on the circumstances and severity of an injury, an injured person may also be able to pursue a claim against a negligent driver.

Potential damages in a serious personal injury case can include medical expenses, lost income, future medical needs, reduced earning capacity, pain and suffering, and other losses when permitted under Florida law.

The compensation available depends on the circumstances of the crash, the nature of the injuries and applicable insurance coverage.

Preserving Evidence After an Accident in a Parking Lot

Determining exactly what happened can require evidence beyond the initial police report.

Parking lots and commercial properties may have surveillance cameras that captured the moments before or during a crash. Investigators may also examine photographs of the scene, vehicle damage, witness statements and information stored by the vehicle itself.

Because surveillance footage can sometimes be overwritten or deleted after a relatively short period, preserving available evidence may become important when an accident results in significant injuries or disputed liability.

Investigation Into Marco Island Building Crash Continues

Marco Island Police and Fire Rescue continued investigating the October 3 crash in the 260 block of North Collier Boulevard.

Three people were inside the vehicle when it struck the front of a building. One was transported to a hospital for additional evaluation, while two others were treated and released at the scene. Officials described the apparent damage to the building as minor.

Authorities had not released further information about what caused the crash.

Anyone injured in a Florida motor vehicle accident can speak with a personal injury attorney about the circumstances of the collision, available insurance coverage and whether they may have grounds to pursue additional compensation.
