One Dead, One Critically Injured in Tow Truck Rollover Crash in Southwest Miami-Dade
A fatal rollover crash involving two tow trucks in southwest Miami-Dade left one man dead and another critically injured Monday morning, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say the crash occurred around 9:00 a.m. near the intersection of Southwest 288th Street and Old Dixie Highway. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered one adult male who was pronounced dead by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
A second man was also located at the scene and transported to a local hospital in critical condition, officials said. The identities of both individuals have not yet been released.
Video from the crash site showed extensive debris scattered across the roadway, including a red tow truck that had overturned and a second tow truck with significant front-end damage. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Collisions involving heavy-duty vehicles such as tow trucks often result in severe injuries due to the size and weight of the vehicles involved. Rollover crashes in particular can produce devastating consequences, including:
- Fatal blunt-force trauma
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Crush injuries
- Internal bleeding
These types of incidents frequently require detailed reconstruction to determine exactly how the crash occurred.
Investigators may review several factors when determining what led to a commercial vehicle crash, including:
- Speed and driving behavior
- Right-of-way violations
- Improper lane changes or turns
- Mechanical issues or maintenance failures
- Roadway or visibility conditions
Commercial vehicle operators are held to heightened safety standards due to the risks associated with operating heavy equipment on public roads.
Legal Options After a Fatal or Serious Commercial Vehicle Crash
When a fatal crash occurs, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law if negligence contributed to the incident. Injured victims may also pursue compensation for their losses.
Potential claims may involve:
- Negligence by commercial drivers
- Employer or company liability
- Vehicle maintenance or mechanical failures
- Third-party liability
Compensation in these cases may include:
- Medical expenses
- Lost income and future earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Funeral and burial costs
- Loss of companionship and support
Florida applies a modified comparative negligence system (§768.81, Florida Statutes), meaning liability may be shared among multiple parties depending on the facts.
While law enforcement investigates for criminal or traffic violations, civil claims require a separate analysis focused on liability and compensation.
A legal investigation may include:
- Crash reconstruction
- Commercial vehicle inspection and maintenance records
- Witness statements
- Surveillance or dashcam footage
- Insurance and employment records
Preserving evidence early is critical in serious and fatal crash cases.
