One Dead in Crash on Stringfellow Road on Pine Island, Authorities Say

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic crash on Pine Island claimed one life Friday afternoon, prompting a full road closure and an active investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO). The collision occurred at the intersection of Stringfellow Road and Avalon Lane, a busy stretch of roadway often used by local residents and seasonal travelers on the island.

According to FHP, the crash involved two vehicles and resulted in the death of an adult victim at the scene. First responders arrived quickly, but despite emergency efforts, the individual could not be saved.

Following the crash, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office shut down all northbound and southbound lanes of Stringfellow Road, urging drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Significant delays were reported as investigators worked to document the scene and determine what may have caused the violent collision.

Authorities have not yet released information on the identities of the drivers involved, whether any passengers were in the vehicles, or what factors may have contributed to the crash.

Common Causes of Serious Crashes on Pine Island

Stringfellow Road has seen an increase in crashes in recent years due to:

  • High-speed travel on extended straightaways
  • Heavy seasonal traffic
  • Limited lighting in certain areas
  • Narrow shoulders
  • Distracted or impaired driving

While the cause of this specific crash remains unknown, two-vehicle collisions on rural roadways often involve left-turn accidents, failure to yield, speeding, or lane departures.

When a loved one is killed in a collision caused by another driver, Florida law allows surviving family members to pursue a wrongful death claim under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes § 768.16–768.26). Potential compensation may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of companionship and protection
  • Loss of financial support
  • Medical expenses related to the final injury
  • Mental pain and suffering for surviving family members

Fatal crashes involving multiple vehicles often require a detailed investigation to determine:

  • Who had the right of way
  • Whether speeding, distraction, or impairment played a role
  • Vehicle damage patterns
  • Collision reconstruction data
  • Witness accounts and traffic camera footage, if available

Families should know they are not expected to navigate this process alone.
