One Critically Injured, Two Seriously Hurt in Head-On Collision on U.S. 90 in Gadsden County
Three people were seriously injured, including one who remains in critical condition, after a head-on collision early Monday morning on U.S. 90 in Gadsden County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash temporarily shut down the highway as emergency crews responded and investigators worked to determine what caused the sedan to cross the median into oncoming traffic.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. on July 13, 2026, on U.S. 90 eastbound, west of River Birch Road in Gadsden County.
Investigators reported that:
- A sedan occupied by three Gadsden County men was traveling westbound.
- For reasons that remain under investigation, the sedan departed from the inside westbound lane.
- The vehicle crossed the grassy center median and entered the eastbound inside lane.
- The sedan collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by a man from Quincy.
- Following the impact, the sedan rotated clockwise before coming to rest facing east.
- The pickup truck also came to rest in the center median.
As a result of the crash:
- The sedan’s driver suffered serious injuries.
- One passenger in the sedan suffered critical injuries.
- A second passenger sustained serious injuries.
- The pickup truck driver suffered minor injuries.
All four individuals were transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare for treatment.
The roadway remained closed for several hours before reopening around 8:30 a.m.
Investigation Underway
The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate what caused the sedan to leave its lane and cross into oncoming traffic.
Investigators will likely review:
- Driver distraction.
- Fatigue or drowsy driving.
- Possible impairment.
- Medical emergencies.
- Vehicle mechanical condition.
- Roadway and weather conditions.
- Physical evidence from the crash scene.
- Witness statements and crash reconstruction findings.
No citations or criminal charges have been announced.
Head-On Collisions Often Cause Catastrophic Injuries
Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of motor vehicle collisions because the combined force of two vehicles traveling in opposite directions dramatically increases the likelihood of serious injury or death.
Even at moderate speeds, these crashes frequently result in traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, multiple fractures, internal injuries, and permanent disabilities.
Potential Legal Options After a Serious Head-On Crash
Although preliminary information indicates the sedan crossed the center median, investigators must determine whether additional factors contributed to the collision before liability can be established.
Depending on the results of the investigation, injured victims and their families may have legal options if another party’s negligence played a role in causing or contributing to the crash.
Potential claims could involve:
- A negligent driver whose actions caused the collision.
- A vehicle manufacturer if a mechanical defect contributed to the loss of control.
- A maintenance provider if improper repairs or maintenance caused a vehicle failure.
- A government agency responsible for roadway design, maintenance, or hazardous conditions, when permitted under Florida law.
Victims injured in serious crashes may be entitled to pursue compensation for:
- Emergency medical treatment.
- Hospitalization and surgeries.
- Rehabilitation and physical therapy.
- Future medical care.
- Lost income and diminished earning capacity.
- Pain and suffering.
- Permanent disability or disfigurement.
- Emotional distress and reduced quality of life.
If the critically injured passenger or any other victim later dies from injuries sustained in the collision, surviving family members may also have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).
Important Evidence in Head-On Collision Cases
Serious injury crashes often require extensive investigation to determine exactly how they occurred.
Important evidence may include:
- Vehicle event data recorder (black box) information.
- Crash reconstruction analysis.
- Skid marks and roadway evidence.
- Cell phone records, if distraction is suspected.
- Toxicology testing, when appropriate.
- Surveillance or dash camera footage.
- Witness statements.
- Vehicle inspection and maintenance records.
Prompt preservation of evidence can be critical when evaluating both criminal liability and potential civil claims.
Investigation Continues
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the head-on collision on U.S. 90 in Gadsden County.
Additional information regarding the cause of the crash and the conditions of those injured may be released as investigators complete their review.
Head-on collisions often leave victims and their families facing long recoveries and uncertain futures. Our thoughts are with everyone injured in this crash, and we hope those receiving treatment make a full and speedy recovery.
