Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A serious crash involving a semi tractor-trailer and a pickup truck temporarily shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Brevard County early Tuesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The collision left one driver trapped inside a heavily damaged vehicle before rescue crews extricated the victim and airlifted them to a hospital with serious injuries.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on July 14, 2026, on southbound Interstate 95 near the State Road 46 exit in Mims.

Investigators reported that:

  • The collision involved a semi tractor-trailer and a Ford F-450 pickup truck.
  • The pickup truck was towing a trailer loaded with gravel.
  • The driver of the Ford F-450 became trapped inside the vehicle following the collision.
  • Emergency crews successfully extricated the driver.
  • The driver was airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
  • All southbound lanes of Interstate 95 were temporarily closed while first responders worked at the scene.
  • The roadway has since reopened.

Investigation Underway

The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the collision.

Investigators will likely examine:

  • The sequence of events leading to the crash.
  • Vehicle speeds.
  • Lane positioning and roadway conditions.
  • Commercial vehicle safety compliance.
  • Driver distraction, fatigue, or impairment.
  • Electronic logging device (ELD) data from the tractor-trailer, if applicable.
  • Witness statements.
  • Physical evidence from the crash scene.
  • Any available dash camera or surveillance footage.

No citations or criminal charges have been announced.

Commercial Truck Crashes Often Result in Severe Injuries

Because of their size and weight, tractor-trailers can cause devastating damage when involved in collisions with smaller vehicles.

Crashes involving commercial trucks frequently result in catastrophic injuries, including:

  • Traumatic brain injuries.
  • Spinal cord injuries.
  • Multiple fractures.
  • Internal organ damage.
  • Crush injuries.
  • Long-term disability.

Victims often require extensive emergency treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not determined the cause of the crash, and it is too early to assign legal responsibility.

If the investigation determines that negligence contributed to the collision, injured victims may have the right to pursue compensation through a personal injury claim.

Depending on the facts of the case, potentially liable parties may include:

  • The commercial truck driver.
  • The trucking company.
  • A maintenance or repair company.
  • A cargo loading company if improperly secured cargo contributed to the collision.
  • A manufacturer if defective equipment played a role.

Compensation in a truck accident case may include:

  • Emergency medical expenses.
  • Hospitalization and future medical treatment.
  • Rehabilitation costs.
  • Lost wages and reduced earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Permanent disability or impairment.
  • Property damage and other financial losses.

Commercial trucking accidents are often more complex than typical vehicle collisions because they may involve multiple insurance policies, federal safety regulations, and corporate defendants.

Preserving Evidence Is Critical

Evidence collected immediately after a commercial vehicle collision can play an important role in determining liability.

Important evidence may include:

  • Florida Highway Patrol crash reports.
  • Electronic logging device (ELD) records.
  • Driver qualification and training records.
  • Truck maintenance and inspection records.
  • Vehicle event data recorder information.
  • Dash camera footage.
  • Witness statements.
  • Crash reconstruction analysis.

Preserving this evidence as early as possible can help ensure an accurate understanding of how the collision occurred.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the serious crash on Interstate 95 near State Road 46 in Brevard County.

Additional information regarding the cause of the collision and the injured driver’s condition may be released as the investigation progresses.

Our Thoughts Are With Those Affected

Serious crashes involving commercial vehicles can have life-changing consequences for victims and their families. We hope the injured driver makes a full recovery and encourage anyone with information about the crash to cooperate with investigators.
