Ocala Woman Killed After Stopped SUV Is Rear-Ended and Overturns
A 40-year-old Ocala woman was killed Sunday afternoon after her stopped SUV was struck from behind by a pickup truck at a Marion County intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred around 12:20 p.m. on March 1 near the intersection of NE 36th Avenue Road and NE 40th Avenue Road.
According to FHP:
- The 40-year-old woman was traveling northbound on NE 36th Avenue Road in an SUV.
- She came to a stop at the intersection of NE 36th Avenue Road and NE 40th Avenue Road.
- A pickup truck driven by a 68-year-old Ocala man struck her SUV from behind.
Troopers say the force of the collision propelled the SUV across the intersection, causing it to overturn.
The woman, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck sustained serious injuries. His passenger, a 60-year-old Ocala woman, suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts.
The crash remains under investigation.
While rear-end crashes are often perceived as minor, collisions at intersections can become deadly — particularly when the impact is forceful enough to push a vehicle into cross traffic or cause a rollover.
Factors investigators typically evaluate in these cases include:
- Speed at the time of impact
- Brake application and skid marks
- Driver distraction (including cell phone use)
- Medical events
- Mechanical failures
Even when occupants are properly restrained, rollover crashes significantly increase the risk of fatal injury.
Legal Considerations in Fatal Rear-End Crashes
Under Florida law, drivers are required to maintain a safe following distance and exercise reasonable care to avoid collisions. In most rear-end crashes, the trailing driver may be presumed at fault unless evidence suggests otherwise.
When a rear-end collision results in a fatality, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation in such cases may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses incurred prior to death
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
Because both vehicles were occupied and the pickup driver sustained serious injuries, insurance and liability issues may require careful evaluation.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash at NE 36th Avenue Road and NE 40th Avenue Road.
