Ocala Radio Icon and Beloved Community Member Dies in Tragic Crash
The Ocala community is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished voices and hearts. Larry Whitler, affectionately known on the airwaves as “The Giant”, died on July 17 following a two-vehicle crash along State Road 200. He was 70 years old.
The crash also seriously injured his lifelong friend and radio partner, Robin MacBlane, who remains hospitalized. Together, Whitler and MacBlane formed the beloved broadcasting duo “Robin and The Giant”, a staple of Marion County’s local radio scene for decades.
While the crash that claimed Larry Whitler’s life is still under investigation, it is not uncommon for accidents involving older vehicles, mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or roadway hazards to become grounds for wrongful death claims under Florida law.
In any fatal accident, potential causes include:
- Distracted or impaired driving
- Failure to yield or obey traffic signals
- Vehicle defects or malfunctions
- Poor road design or maintenance
- Weather or visibility issues
Under Florida Statute § 768.19, when negligence by another party contributes to a fatal crash, surviving family members may be eligible to pursue compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Emotional pain and suffering
- Loss of companionship and support
- Medical costs before death
- Loss of income and benefits
Even if the other party in the crash is not immediately cited, a thorough investigation and legal review can determine liability. If you or someone you love has suffered a similar loss, consulting a wrongful death attorney can help clarify your rights and options.
