Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down State Road 528 in Orange County, Injuries Reported

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A serious multi-vehicle crash shut down all westbound lanes of State Road 528 in Orange County on Monday morning, prompting a large emergency response and causing significant traffic delays for commuters traveling through Central Florida.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision occurred near Dallas Boulevard and involved multiple vehicles. Emergency responders, including a medical helicopter, were dispatched to the scene as crews worked to assist injured victims and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

What We Know About the Crash

Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene at approximately 9:00 a.m. on June 22, 2026.

According to initial reports:

  • The crash involved multiple vehicles.
  • The collision occurred on westbound State Road 528 near Dallas Boulevard.
  • All westbound lanes were temporarily shut down.
  • Multiple injuries were reported.
  • A medical helicopter landed at the scene.
  • Traffic was diverted away from the crash area.

Authorities instructed westbound motorists to exit State Road 528 at State Road 520 while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

At this time, investigators have not released information regarding the number of vehicles involved or the severity of the injuries sustained.

Medical Helicopter Called to Scene

The landing of a medical helicopter often indicates that at least one victim may have required rapid transport to a trauma center.

Air medical transport is typically utilized when patients suffer potentially life-threatening injuries or when ground transportation may delay critical medical care.

However, authorities have not confirmed the condition of any injured individuals.

Additional information regarding victims’ injuries may become available as the investigation progresses.

Major Traffic Delays Followed Closure

State Road 528, also known as the Martin Andersen Beachline Expressway, serves as a major transportation corridor connecting Orlando, Orange County, Brevard County, and Florida’s Space Coast.

When all lanes are closed due to a crash, backups can quickly develop, particularly during daytime travel hours.

Drivers traveling toward Orlando International Airport, tourist destinations, and surrounding communities experienced significant delays while crews responded to the incident.

Common Causes of Multi-Vehicle Crashes

Although investigators have not announced what caused the crash, multi-vehicle collisions frequently involve a combination of factors, including:

  • Following too closely
  • Distracted driving
  • Sudden traffic slowdowns
  • Excessive speed
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Driver fatigue
  • Adverse weather conditions
  • Failure to maintain control of a vehicle

Under Florida Statute §316.0895, motorists are required to maintain a safe following distance behind other vehicles. Chain-reaction crashes often occur when drivers are unable to stop safely after traffic slows unexpectedly.

Additionally, Florida Statute §316.1925 prohibits careless driving, which is defined as operating a vehicle without reasonable regard for surrounding traffic conditions and roadway safety.

At this stage, authorities have not indicated whether any traffic violations contributed to the crash.

Potential Liability Following Serious Injury Crashes

When a crash results in injuries, investigators and insurance companies often examine whether negligence played a role.

Potential contributing factors that may be reviewed include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Failure to yield
  • Aggressive driving
  • Commercial vehicle violations
  • Vehicle maintenance issues
  • Impaired driving

Florida follows a modified comparative negligence system under Florida Statute §768.81, meaning responsibility for a crash may be allocated among multiple parties when appropriate.

If injuries were caused by another driver’s negligence, injured victims may have legal options to pursue compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Future medical treatment
  • Pain and suffering
  • Rehabilitation costs

Any determination regarding liability will depend on the facts uncovered during the investigation.

How Troopers Investigate Major Highway Crashes

In serious collisions involving multiple vehicles and injuries, Florida Highway Patrol investigators typically review:

  • Vehicle damage patterns
  • Physical evidence from the roadway
  • Witness statements
  • Crash scene measurements
  • Traffic camera footage
  • Electronic vehicle data
  • Driver statements
  • Weather and roadway conditions

The goal is to determine how the collision occurred and whether any traffic laws were violated.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Officials have not yet released:

  • The number of injured individuals
  • The identities of those involved
  • Whether citations or criminal charges are anticipated
  • A preliminary cause of the collision

Additional information is expected as investigators complete their review.

A Reminder for Florida Drivers

Multi-vehicle crashes can develop in seconds, particularly on high-speed roadways where traffic conditions change rapidly.

Drivers can help reduce crash risks by maintaining safe following distances, staying alert, avoiding distractions, and reducing speed when approaching congestion or emergency scenes.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this crash as they recover.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation remains ongoing.
