Motorcyclist Killed in Port St. Lucie Crash Involving SUV
A 65-year-old motorcyclist has died following a crash involving an SUV in Port St. Lucie late Monday morning, according to police. The fatal collision shut down a major roadway as investigators worked to determine what led to the crash.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. near the intersection of Southwest Crosstown Boulevard and Southwest Southern Hills Drive, according to the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
Authorities say the collision involved:
- A motorcycle
- An SUV
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the motorcyclist to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, the rider later succumbed to his injuries.
Police confirmed the victim was a 65-year-old man, though his identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
The crash prompted significant road closures in the area as investigators processed the scene. Police closed Crosstown Parkway between Southwest Southern Hills Boulevard and Southwest Cresswind Way, causing major traffic disruptions.
As of now, authorities have not released details about:
- What caused the collision
- Whether speed or impairment were factors
- Which vehicle may have had the right of way
The crash remains under active investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has video footage is urged to contact Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer B. Thompson at 772-871-5000.
Motorcycle Accidents Often Result in Severe Injuries or Death
Motorcyclists face significantly higher risks of catastrophic injury or death compared to occupants of passenger vehicles. Without the protection of a vehicle frame, airbags, or seatbelts, riders are especially vulnerable during collisions with larger vehicles such as SUVs or trucks.
Common causes of motorcycle crashes in Florida include:
- Drivers failing to yield to motorcycles
- Unsafe lane changes
- Distracted driving
- Speeding
- Left-turn collisions at intersections
- Poor visibility
Even relatively low-speed collisions can result in life-threatening injuries for riders.
Legal Options After a Fatal Motorcycle Crash
When a fatal motorcycle crash is caused by another driver’s negligence, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law. Compensation may be available for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs prior to death
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and guidance
- Emotional pain and suffering
An investigation is critical to determining whether negligence played a role and who may be held legally responsible.
