Motorcycle Crash With Injuries Shuts Down I-95 South at Ives Dairy Road

A crash that appeared to involve a motorcycle and at least one other vehicle shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Ives Dairy Road Monday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that troopers responded to an injury crash at Ives Dairy Road on August 31, 2026. All southbound main travel lanes were temporarily closed, while traffic moved slowly through the express lanes.

Aerial footage showed a motorcycle in the roadway and a heavily damaged car. Authorities had not released information about who was injured or what caused the collision.

What Happened on I-95 at Ives Dairy Road?

FHP responded Monday morning to a crash with injuries in the southbound lanes of I-95 at Ives Dairy Road.

According to traffic information from the Florida Department of Transportation, the collision resulted in the closure of all main southbound travel lanes.

Aerial footage from the scene appeared to show a motorcycle and at least one passenger vehicle. The car visible at the scene had sustained significant damage.

Officials did not immediately identify the people involved or provide information about the number or severity of injuries.

What Caused the I-95 Motorcycle Crash?

Authorities had not announced a cause of the collision.

Because the crash occurred on a multi-lane interstate, investigators may examine whether lane changes, following distance, speed, distraction or another driving maneuver contributed.

The location and nature of the damage to the vehicles may also help investigators determine how the collision occurred.

Although aerial footage showed both a motorcycle and damaged car, the available information does not establish which vehicle initiated the sequence of events or who may have been responsible.

Motorcyclists Have the Right to Use a Full Traffic Lane

Florida law generally gives motorcyclists the right to the full use of a traffic lane.

Under Fla. Stat. § 316.209, another motor vehicle generally may not operate in a manner that deprives a motorcycle of the full use of a lane.

That protection can become particularly important on highways such as I-95, where vehicles frequently merge and change lanes while traveling at higher speeds.

If investigators determine that one of the vehicles was changing lanes immediately before the crash, Fla. Stat. § 316.089 may also become relevant. Florida law generally requires a driver to remain within a single lane and not move from that lane until the movement can be made safely.

Authorities have not indicated that an unsafe lane change caused this collision.

Following Distance May Also Be Examined

Following distance is another issue investigators may consider.

Under Fla. Stat. § 316.0895, drivers generally may not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent based on speed, traffic and roadway conditions.

Motorcycles can slow quickly and are substantially smaller than passenger vehicles, making adequate following distance especially important.

If evidence shows that one vehicle struck another from behind, investigators may examine whether the trailing driver had enough distance to react.

The preliminary report does not establish that this was a rear-end collision.

Motorcyclists have little physical protection when a collision occurs.

Determining Liability After an I-95 Motorcycle Crash

Liability will depend on what the investigation establishes about the cause of the collision.

If another motorist made an unsafe lane change, followed too closely, drove distracted or otherwise failed to use reasonable care around the motorcycle, that driver could potentially be responsible for resulting injuries.

If the evidence shows that more than one person contributed to the collision, Florida’s modified comparative negligence law under Fla. Stat. § 768.81 may allow responsibility to be divided among the parties.

No information released so far establishes negligence by either the motorcyclist or the other driver.

Drivers traveling south on I-95 Monday morning faced additional delays because of a separate crash near Northwest 62nd Street.

That collision reportedly involved a pickup truck.

The two incidents were reported separately, and there is no indication that the Northwest 62nd Street crash was connected to the motorcycle collision at Ives Dairy Road.
