Miramar Woman Killed in Early-Morning Crash on I-595 to I-75 Ramp in Broward County
A 22-year-old woman from Miramar was killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on an Interstate 595 ramp in Broward County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers said the crash occurred around 2:15 a.m. on the westbound I-595 ramp leading to southbound Interstate 75 near Davie. According to FHP, the woman was driving a Honda Civic when she entered the ramp and, for reasons that remain unclear, swerved off the roadway. The vehicle struck a guardrail and then a palm tree.
Emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released, and the crash remains under investigation. The collision caused a temporary closure of the southbound ramp as troopers conducted their investigation.
Highway ramps—especially at night—present unique dangers due to sharp curves, elevation changes, limited lighting, and reduced reaction time. Single-vehicle crashes on ramps often raise questions about roadway design, visibility, signage, and safety barriers.
Factors frequently examined in fatal ramp crashes include:
- Roadway curvature and ramp geometry
- Guardrail placement and condition
- Lighting and visibility at night
- Speed advisories or warning signage
- Road surface conditions
- Potential vehicle defects or mechanical issues
While some single-vehicle crashes involve driver error, others may be influenced by dangerous roadway conditions or inadequate safety features.
Legal Options After a Fatal Crash in Florida
When a motor vehicle crash results in death, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).
In Florida, a wrongful death claim is brought by the personal representative of the deceased person’s estate on behalf of surviving family members, which may include parents when the victim is a young adult.
Depending on the circumstances, recoverable damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses related to the fatal injuries
- Loss of financial support and services
- Loss of companionship, guidance, and protection
- Mental pain and suffering of surviving family members
If roadway design, guardrail failures, poor lighting, or other hazardous conditions contributed to the crash, liability may extend beyond the driver and include governmental entities or contractors responsible for roadway design and maintenance. Claims against government entities are governed by Florida’s sovereign immunity statute (§768.28), which includes specific notice requirements and damage caps.
Florida also follows a modified comparative negligence system (§768.81), meaning fault is allocated among all responsible parties, and recovery may be barred only if the decedent is found to be more than 50% at fault.
FHP investigations focus on determining how a crash occurred and whether traffic laws were violated. They do not evaluate civil liability or pursue compensation for grieving families.
An independent legal investigation may help preserve and analyze critical evidence, including:
- Roadway and ramp design plans
- Guardrail condition and compliance standards
- Lighting and visibility studies
- Vehicle data and crash reconstruction
- Surveillance or traffic camera footage
- Insurance coverage and responsible parties
This evidence can be critical in determining whether negligence contributed to the crash.
