Milton Three-Vehicle Crash Involving Ambulance Leaves One Seriously Injured

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A three-vehicle crash involving two passenger cars and a Lifeguard ambulance left one person seriously injured Saturday night in Milton. The collision occurred at the intersection of Dogwood Drive and Berry Hill Road, shutting down Dogwood Drive for several hours as police and traffic investigators worked the scene.

According to the Milton Police Department, two cars initially collided and then struck the ambulance. First responders transported at least one individual to a local hospital with serious injuries. No details have been released about the condition of the ambulance crew or whether anyone else involved sustained minor injuries.

Milton Police Chief Jennifer Frank urged the public to remain alert on the roads. She emphasized the importance of safe driving practices, reminding motorists to monitor their speed, obey traffic signals, and wear seat belts, which can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in major collisions.

The Milton Police traffic homicide investigations unit responded to the scene and continues working to determine what led to the initial collision between the two vehicles and the subsequent impact with the ambulance.

Crashes involving ambulances or other emergency vehicles can be complex due to the number of vehicles involved and the various right-of-way laws that may apply. Determining liability in these situations often requires a detailed investigation into:

  • Driver negligence or speeding
  • Failure to yield at intersections
  • Whether the ambulance had an active emergency signal
  • Traffic signal timing and right-of-way rules
  • Possible distracted or impaired driving
  • Roadway lighting and visibility at the time of the crash

Because two vehicles collided before striking the ambulance, investigators will examine the sequence of events closely to determine which driver initiated the chain reaction and whether multiple parties share fault.

Under Florida Statute §316.126, drivers must yield to ambulances with active lights and sirens. However, emergency vehicles are also required to exercise due regard for the safety of others while responding to calls. If an ambulance is hit while traveling normally or responding to a call, multiple layers of liability may apply, including claims against negligent drivers.

In a three-vehicle scenario like the Milton crash, those injured may have claims arising from:

  • The at-fault driver of the initial collision
  • The secondary collision with the ambulance
  • Failure of any driver to obey traffic signals
  • Speeding or inattentive driving contributing to the chain reaction

Those injured in a multi-vehicle crash may be eligible to pursue compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Long-term rehabilitation
  • Pain and suffering
  • Permanent disability or reduced earning capacity
  • Property damage

In cases involving serious injuries and multiple potential defendants, it is crucial to preserve evidence early. This can include photos of vehicle damage, traffic camera footage, black-box data from involved vehicles, and eyewitness statements.

Ambulance personnel injured on duty may also have workers’ compensation claims in addition to potential third-party liability claims against negligent drivers.

Because multi-vehicle collisions can involve overlapping insurance policies and conflicting accounts of what occurred, a thorough investigation is essential. Accident reconstruction specialists may be needed to determine which driver bears responsibility and to ensure that injured victims are not unfairly blamed.

An experienced Florida personal injury attorney can help:

  • Investigate the cause of the crash
  • Secure surveillance footage and event data recorder information
  • Handle communication with insurance companies
  • Identify all sources of compensation
  • Protect injured victims from low settlement offers
