Miami Man Arrested After Allegedly Fleeing Tesla Crash That Killed Scooter Rider

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 19-year-old Miami man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a scooter rider in Miami-Dade County last month.

According to authorities, the driver allegedly fled the scene after striking the victim, later returning with family members before ultimately confessing to investigators.

What We Know About the Crash

According to Miami-Dade Police, the fatal collision occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on June 8, 2026, near Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 90th Street.

Investigators say:

  • Tyquane Ramses Hankerson, 19, was driving a Tesla Model 3.
  • The Tesla struck a person riding a scooter from behind.
  • The scooter rider suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The victim’s identity has not yet been publicly released.

Authorities allege that after the collision, Hankerson exited the Tesla, checked on the victim, and called 911.

However, investigators say he then returned to the vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot with two other individuals.

According to the arrest report, Hankerson later returned to the crash scene with members of his family.

Investigation Led to Arrest

Police say Hankerson initially told investigators he had been a passenger in the Tesla rather than the driver.

However, investigators reviewed surveillance footage from a nearby residence that allegedly showed him exiting from the driver’s side of the vehicle immediately after the collision.

According to the arrest report, Hankerson later provided a full confession.

He was arrested Tuesday and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

During his first court appearance, a judge ordered that he be released on house arrest with GPS monitoring or, alternatively, on a $5,000 bond.

The criminal case remains pending.

Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Crash in Florida

Florida law requires every driver involved in a crash resulting in injury or death to immediately stop, remain at the scene, provide identifying information, and render reasonable assistance to injured victims.

Leaving the scene of a fatal crash is a serious felony offense that can result in significant criminal penalties, including imprisonment, fines, driver’s license revocation, and other consequences if a conviction is obtained.

Criminal charges, however, are separate from any civil claims that may be brought by the victim’s surviving family members.

Families who lose a loved one in a fatal motor vehicle collision may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

If the evidence establishes that another person’s negligence caused the collision, surviving family members may be able to recover compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses.
  • Medical expenses incurred before death.
  • Loss of financial support and future income.
  • Loss of companionship, guidance, and protection.
  • Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.
  • Other damages permitted under Florida law.

Because this crash allegedly involved a Tesla, investigators may also evaluate whether electronic vehicle data, onboard cameras, or other technology can help reconstruct exactly how the collision occurred.

In some cases, insurance coverage may also be available through the at-fault driver’s automobile insurance policy or other applicable sources.

Preserving Evidence Following a Fatal Hit-and-Run

Evidence can play a critical role in both criminal prosecutions and civil wrongful death cases.

Important evidence may include:

  • Surveillance camera footage.
  • Tesla event data recorder and vehicle telemetry.
  • Witness statements.
  • Crash scene photographs.
  • Physical evidence from the roadway.
  • Cell phone records, when appropriate.
  • Police reports and accident reconstruction findings.

Prompt preservation of this evidence can help establish liability and provide answers for grieving families.

Investigation Continues

Miami-Dade authorities continue to investigate the fatal crash.

Additional details may become available as the criminal case proceeds through the court system and investigators continue reviewing the evidence.

The loss of a life in a hit-and-run collision is a heartbreaking tragedy that leaves families searching for answers and accountability. We extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s loved ones and hope the ongoing legal process provides them with justice and the opportunity to move forward.
