Miami Apartment Shooting in Liberty City Leaves One Man Dead, Two Detained

A deadly shooting early Friday morning has left a community in Miami’s Liberty City shaken after a 33-year-old man was gunned down inside an apartment unit. The incident occurred on June 21, 2025, at an apartment complex located at 820 NW 70th Street, and is now the focus of an active homicide investigation by the Miami Police Department.
Officers with the Miami Police Department responded to a call around 1:38 a.m. reporting a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a man with gunshot wounds inside Unit #4 of the building. Miami Fire Rescue transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.
Police confirmed that two individuals have been detained for questioning, but no formal arrests have been made. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, and it’s unclear if the detained individuals were residents, guests, or strangers to the victim.
The scene remained active through the morning as officers secured the property and awaited a warrant to search the unit.
The apartment complex is located in Liberty City, a historic neighborhood that has faced ongoing concerns about crime, safety, and underinvestment. Residents expressed fear and frustration at the violence.
“You never expect something like this to happen in your building,” one neighbor said. “We need better security around here—more cameras, better lighting, and someone to actually monitor who comes and goes.”
Could the Apartment Complex Be Held Liable? Understanding Negligent Security
In cases like this, the property owner or management company may bear some legal responsibility under Florida’s negligent security laws if they failed to take reasonable steps to protect tenants and guests from foreseeable harm.
Under Florida premises liability law, landlords and property owners have a legal duty to maintain reasonably safe conditions for residents and visitors. If there is a history of violent crime or threats on or near the property, the owner may be required to implement security measures to prevent incidents like this from occurring.
Examples of negligent security can include:
- Lack of security cameras or surveillance systems
- Broken or unsecured gates and doors
- Poor lighting in hallways, stairwells, or parking lots
- Failure to conduct background checks on tenants or staff
- Not responding to prior complaints or criminal activity
If it is determined that the property had inadequate security and the incident was foreseeable, the apartment complex could potentially be held liable in a civil lawsuit filed by the victim’s family.
Wrongful Death and Negligent Security Claims in Florida
In Florida, the surviving family members of a murder or shooting victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against a negligent property owner. This is a separate claim from any criminal charges and seeks financial compensation for the family’s losses.
Under The Florida Wrongful Death Act, eligible family members (such as a spouse, children, or parents) may be entitled to damages including:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses related to the incident
- Loss of companionship, guidance, and emotional support
- Mental and emotional suffering
- Loss of financial support and future income
If the shooting happened because the apartment complex failed to take reasonable security precautions despite prior knowledge of potential risks, the family may have a strong case for negligent security.
The Miami Police Department’s Homicide Unit continues to investigate the incident. No motive has been confirmed, and the two individuals detained remain persons of interest.
