Melbourne Teen Dies After Hit-and-Run Crash While Riding Electric Scooter in Brevard County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 15-year-old Melbourne teenager has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter in Brevard County on Father’s Day, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred in the early morning hours along Viera Boulevard. Investigators say the driver fled the scene after the crash, prompting a criminal hit-and-run investigation. Troopers have since located a vehicle believed to be involved and continue working to identify the driver.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026, near the intersection of:

  • Viera Boulevard
  • Independence Avenue
  • Viera, Brevard County

Investigators say a 2009 Hyundai Genesis was traveling eastbound on Viera Boulevard when it veered onto the outside shoulder.

At the same time, a 15-year-old Melbourne boy was riding an electric scooter eastbound on the shoulder in the same direction as traffic.

Troopers say the right side of the Hyundai struck the teen, causing catastrophic injuries.

The teenager was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where he later died.

His identity has not yet been publicly released.

Driver Allegedly Fled the Scene

Rather than stopping to render aid, investigators say the driver continued driving away after the collision.

Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury or death is a serious felony under Florida law.

Florida Statute §316.027 requires any driver involved in a crash resulting in injury or death to:

  • Immediately stop at the scene or as close as possible.
  • Remain at the scene until legal obligations have been fulfilled.
  • Provide identifying information.
  • Render reasonable assistance to injured persons, including contacting emergency medical services when necessary.

Failure to comply can result in severe criminal penalties, particularly when a fatality occurs.

Troopers Locate Suspected Vehicle

During their investigation, Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Investigators recovered a significant piece of evidence from the roadway.

Troopers located a passenger-side mirror at the crash scene and determined it belonged to a black 2009–2010 Hyundai Genesis.

Using that evidence, investigators later located a vehicle matching the description approximately 1.5 miles south of the crash site.

Authorities reported that the vehicle displayed damage consistent with the collision.

FHP has taken possession of the vehicle for forensic examination as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.

At this time, investigators have not announced whether a suspect has been arrested.

Potential Criminal Charges

If investigators determine the driver knowingly left the scene after the fatal collision, prosecutors could pursue several criminal charges depending on the evidence.

Potential charges may include:

  • Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death (Florida Statute §316.027)
  • Vehicular Homicide (Florida Statute §782.071), if reckless driving is established
  • DUI Manslaughter (Florida Statute §316.193), if impairment is determined to be a factor
  • Additional traffic-related offenses if supported by the investigation

The exact charges, if any, will depend upon witness statements, forensic evidence, toxicology results, and the findings of crash reconstruction experts.

Electric Scooter Safety and Florida Law

Electric scooters have become increasingly common throughout Florida communities, but riders remain particularly vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles.

Because scooters provide little physical protection, crashes often result in severe injuries such as:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Internal injuries
  • Multiple fractures
  • Fatal blunt-force trauma

Motorists are required under Florida law to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable roadway users whenever possible.

Could the Family Have a Wrongful Death Claim?

In addition to any criminal prosecution, the teenager’s family may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26) if another party’s negligence caused the fatal collision.

Depending on the facts ultimately established during the investigation, potential civil claims may involve:

  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Hit-and-run conduct
  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Failure to maintain proper control of the vehicle

If liability is established, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Loss of companionship and guidance
  • Mental pain and suffering
  • Loss of future financial support where applicable

A wrongful death claim is separate from any criminal case and has a different legal standard of proof.

FHP Traffic Homicide Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate the crash.

Investigators will likely examine:

  • Vehicle damage
  • DNA and forensic evidence
  • Crash reconstruction
  • Witness statements
  • Surveillance and traffic camera footage
  • Cell phone records, if applicable
  • Vehicle event data
  • Roadway conditions

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the vehicle or driver to contact the Florida Highway Patrol by dialing *347 or submit anonymous tips through CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS.
