Man Killed, Woman Hospitalized After Rollover Crash on Monument Road in Jacksonville
A tragic collision on Monument Road near Lee Road in Jacksonville left one man dead and a woman hospitalized Wednesday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).
The crash occurred around 5:50 p.m. during the height of the evening rush hour. Authorities say a woman in her 30s, driving a Jeep eastbound on Monument Road, collided with a Kia driven by a man in his late 50s, who was attempting to turn left onto Lee Road from the westbound lanes.
The impact caused the Jeep to overturn, eventually coming to rest on its roof in a nearby empty retention pond.
Both drivers were transported to local hospitals. The male driver of the Kia was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, while the female driver of the Jeep remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to JSO.
The intersection of Monument Road and Lee Road was closed for several hours as investigators and cleanup crews worked the scene.
This marks at least the 141st traffic fatality in Duval County in 2025, according to JSO data.
Rollover crashes are among the deadliest types of vehicle accidents. Although they account for only a small percentage of all crashes, they result in a disproportionately high number of fatalities and severe injuries.
Common causes of rollover collisions include:
- Side-impact collisions at intersections
- Sudden turns or overcorrections at high speeds
- Top-heavy vehicles such as SUVs and Jeeps losing stability
- Hitting a curb, guardrail, or embankment that triggers a roll
- Uneven terrain near road shoulders or retention ponds
When a rollover occurs, occupants face extreme forces, often leading to ejection from the vehicle, roof crush injuries, and head or spinal trauma.
In this case, the Jeep’s rollover into the retention area likely intensified the crash’s impact, demonstrating how a simple left-turn error can quickly escalate into a fatal event.
Under Florida traffic law (F.S. §316.122), a driver turning left at an intersection must yield to all oncoming traffic that constitutes an immediate hazard. Failing to yield the right of way is one of the leading causes of intersection crashes across Florida.
Investigators will likely analyze:
- Traffic light timing and visibility at the Monument–Lee intersection
- Speed and positioning of both vehicles prior to impact
- Witness statements or surveillance footage from nearby businesses
- Vehicle “black box” data showing acceleration and braking patterns
If the Kia’s driver failed to yield or misjudged the Jeep’s distance, he may be considered at fault — though contributing factors such as speed, distracted driving, or visibility issues will also play a role in the final determination.
Wrongful Death and Serious Injury Claims After a Crash
When a driver’s negligence leads to a fatal or catastrophic accident, victims and their families may have the right to pursue a personal injury or wrongful death claim under Florida law.
Potential compensation can include:
- Medical expenses (emergency care, hospitalization, rehabilitation)
- Lost wages and loss of future earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Funeral and burial costs (in wrongful death cases)
- Loss of companionship and support for surviving relatives
Under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (§§768.16–768.26), qualifying family members—such as a spouse, children, or parents—may bring a claim on behalf of the deceased’s estate.
Because comparative negligence may apply, meaning more than one party could share fault, it’s critical that victims seek representation from an experienced Jacksonville car accident attorney who can protect their rights and investigate all potential sources of liability.
