Man Killed in Early Morning Crash on Don Shula Expressway in Miami-Dade County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A man lost his life early Tuesday morning after a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a freight truck on the Don Shula Expressway (State Road 874), according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash shut down all southbound lanes of the expressway for several hours while investigators processed the scene and worked to determine what led to the collision.

The crash remains under investigation.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 1:08 a.m. on June 23, 2026, along the southbound lanes of the Don Shula Expressway near Southwest 104th Street.

Investigators reported that:

  • A white Mercedes Coupe was traveling southbound on State Road 874.
  • The Mercedes collided with a freight truck.
  • The driver of the Mercedes suffered fatal injuries.
  • The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.

Details regarding how the collision occurred have not yet been released by investigators.

Southbound Lanes Closed for Hours

The severity of the crash prompted the closure of all southbound lanes of the Don Shula Expressway.

According to FHP, traffic was diverted beginning near Killian Parkway, with the closure extending toward Florida’s Turnpike.

The roadway remained closed for approximately three hours as troopers conducted a preliminary crash investigation and crews cleared the scene.

Traffic delays affected motorists traveling through southern Miami-Dade County during the overnight and early morning hours.

The roadway has since reopened.

Commercial Vehicle Crashes Often Result in Severe Injuries

Collisions involving passenger vehicles and commercial trucks frequently result in catastrophic consequences due to the significant size and weight differences between the vehicles.

Even at moderate speeds, crashes involving freight trucks can cause:

  • Fatal traumatic injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Internal organ damage
  • Multiple fractures
  • Crush injuries

Investigators will likely examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and crash dynamics to determine how the collision occurred.

Florida Highway Patrol Investigation Ongoing

Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.

As part of a fatal crash investigation, authorities typically review:

  • Vehicle positions and damage
  • Physical evidence from the roadway
  • Driver statements
  • Witness accounts
  • Traffic camera footage
  • Vehicle event data recorders
  • Weather and roadway conditions

Investigators have not announced whether speed, impairment, distraction, fatigue, mechanical failure, or other factors may have contributed to the collision.

Although details remain limited, investigators will work to determine whether any traffic laws were violated prior to the crash.

Potential issues commonly examined in serious highway collisions include:

  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Distracted driving
  • Driver fatigue
  • Excessive speed
  • Commercial vehicle safety compliance
  • Equipment or mechanical failures

Under Florida Statute §316.1925, drivers are required to operate vehicles with careful and prudent regard for roadway and traffic conditions.

Additionally, commercial vehicle operators must comply with federal and state safety regulations governing maintenance, operation, and driver conduct.

At this time, no citations or charges have been announced.

Potential Wrongful Death Considerations

When a fatal crash occurs, investigators may examine whether negligence by another driver, company, or third party contributed to the collision.

Depending on the findings, potential issues could involve:

  • Commercial trucking negligence
  • Driver error
  • Improper vehicle maintenance
  • Defective vehicle components
  • Negligent hiring or supervision
  • Violations of safety regulations

If another party is found to have contributed to the crash, surviving family members may have rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

Potential damages can include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Loss of financial support
  • Loss of companionship and guidance
  • Mental pain and suffering experienced by surviving family members

Any civil claim would be separate from any criminal or traffic enforcement action.

Safety Concerns on Florida Expressways

South Florida’s expressway system carries thousands of vehicles daily, including a significant number of commercial trucks.

Safety experts encourage motorists to:

  • Avoid distracted driving
  • Maintain safe following distances
  • Use caution around large trucks
  • Monitor blind spots carefully
  • Adjust speed to traffic conditions

These precautions can help reduce the risk of serious crashes on high-speed roadways.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal collision on the Don Shula Expressway.

Additional information regarding the victim’s identity, contributing factors, and the circumstances surrounding the crash may be released as the investigation progresses.
