According to investigators, a 40-year-old man who lived in the area was riding a skateboard near A1A and Sunrise Boulevard early Tuesday morning.

Moments later, a passing vehicle struck the man while he was lying in the street.

Anyone with information about the crash has been asked to contact Broward Crime Stoppers.
Following the crash, northbound lanes of State Road A1A were shut down as police and investigators processed the scene.
Video footage from the area showed a tarp covering the victim and a skateboard lying near the roadway as investigators documented the crash.
The roadway has since reopened to traffic.
Pedestrian Risks on Major Roadways
Roadways such as A1A often experience heavy vehicle traffic, even during early morning hours.
Individuals on foot or using skateboards are particularly vulnerable in these environments because drivers may not expect them in travel lanes.
Factors that often contribute to fatal pedestrian crashes include:
- Low visibility at night or early morning
- Limited lighting along roadways
- Driver distraction
- Speeding
- Pedestrians unexpectedly entering the roadway
When someone falls or becomes incapacitated in traffic lanes, the risk of a fatal collision increases significantly.
Potential Legal Considerations After Pedestrian Crashes
Fatal pedestrian crashes can involve complex legal questions regarding liability and driver responsibility.
Investigators may examine:
- Vehicle speeds and braking evidence
- Traffic camera or surveillance footage
- Roadway lighting conditions
- Witness statements
- Whether the driver attempted to stop or render aid
Even when a pedestrian unexpectedly enters the roadway, drivers may still have legal responsibilities to avoid collisions when possible and remain at the scene of a crash.
In fatal cases, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence contributed to the incident.
Investigation Ongoing
