The Dangers for Wheelchair Users on Roadways

Individuals using wheelchairs are among the most vulnerable roadway users, particularly when traveling near or within traffic lanes.

Risks include:

  • Limited visibility to drivers
  • Lack of protective barriers
  • High-speed vehicle traffic

Even a single impact can result in catastrophic or fatal injuries.

Common Factors in Pedestrian and Wheelchair Accidents

While the crash remains under investigation, similar incidents may involve:

  • Limited or unsafe pedestrian infrastructure
  • Drivers failing to see individuals in the roadway
  • Poor visibility or roadway design
  • Confusion about where wheelchairs should travel

In crashes involving pedestrians or wheelchair users, investigators typically evaluate:

  • Whether the pedestrian had the right of way
  • Driver attentiveness and reaction time
  • Road conditions and visibility
  • Whether proper infrastructure was available

Liability may depend on the specific circumstances of the crash.

Wrongful Death Claims

Families who lose a loved one in a crash may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
