Man Ejected and Killed in Overnight I-95 Crash in Volusia County
A 42-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning after a violent crash on Interstate 95 in Volusia County that caused significant delays for early-morning commuters.
The fatal crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Edgewater and remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday on southbound I-95 just south of Indian River Boulevard in Volusia County.
Troopers say a 42-year-old man from Canton was driving a Ford F-250 pickup truck in the center lane when the vehicle suddenly traveled off the interstate to the left for unknown reasons.
Investigators report that the front of the truck struck a guardrail, causing the pickup to become airborne and overturn.
After striking the guardrail, the pickup truck reportedly:
- Became airborne
- Overturned
- Landed in a water-filled ditch
Florida Highway Patrol officials say the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle during the collision.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash.
Roadway Closures and Investigation
The crash partially blocked the left lane and shoulder of southbound I-95 for several hours while troopers investigated and crews worked to clear the scene.
Traffic delays were reported in the area during the early morning hours.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. Officials have not released additional details at this time.
The Dangers of Rollover and Ejection Crashes
Rollover crashes are among the most deadly types of motor vehicle collisions, particularly when occupants are not wearing seatbelts. According to federal safety data:
- Seatbelts significantly reduce the risk of ejection during a crash
- Ejection dramatically increases the likelihood of fatal injuries
- Single-vehicle crashes often involve roadway departures and loss of control
While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, factors such as speed, roadway conditions, mechanical issues, or driver fatigue are commonly examined in single-vehicle fatal accidents.
When Families May Have Legal Questions After a Fatal Crash
Following a fatal crash, families are often left searching for answers. Depending on the circumstances, investigations may determine whether factors such as:
- Roadway design or maintenance issues
- Vehicle defects
- Improper guardrail installation
- Negligent third-party conduct
played a role in the crash.
A thorough investigation can help families understand what happened and determine whether any legal options may be available.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the deadly crash on I-95 in Volusia County. Additional information may be released as investigators work to determine the cause of the collision.
