Man Dies After Fiery Crash on Fairbanks Ferry Road in Havana

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A man was killed Thursday evening following a fiery single-vehicle crash in Havana, Florida, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred just before 5:00 p.m. near the 1500 block of Fairbanks Ferry Road.

According to troopers, the victim was driving a red truck when the vehicle left the roadway for reasons that are still under investigation.

Authorities reported that the truck:

  • Left the roadway
  • Overturned
  • Landed in a ditch
  • Became fully engulfed in flames

Emergency crews responding to the scene discovered the driver’s body outside of the vehicle.

The driver was the only occupant in the truck at the time of the crash.

Firefighters with the Concord Volunteer Fire Department assisted in extinguishing the blaze while troopers secured the crash scene.

Both directions of Fairbanks Ferry Road were temporarily closed as investigators examined the scene.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Although this incident involved only one vehicle, investigators will work to determine what caused the driver to leave the roadway.

Factors commonly examined in these types of crashes include:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Mechanical failures
  • Tire blowouts
  • Driver distraction
  • Speed or impairment
  • Roadway hazards

Crash reconstruction experts may review tire marks, vehicle damage, and roadway conditions to determine the sequence of events.

While many single-vehicle crashes are caused by driver-related factors, other issues may sometimes contribute to these tragedies.

Possible contributing factors investigators may evaluate include:

  • Dangerous roadway design or maintenance issues
  • Missing guardrails or safety barriers
  • Vehicle defects or mechanical failures
  • Tire manufacturing defects

If a defective vehicle component or hazardous roadway condition played a role in the crash, additional parties may potentially share liability.

When a fatal crash occurs, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence by another party contributed to the accident.

Compensation in these cases may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical costs incurred prior to death
  • Loss of financial support
  • Loss of companionship
  • Emotional pain and suffering

Determining whether outside factors contributed to a crash often requires a thorough investigation.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash on Fairbanks Ferry Road in Havana.
