Man Airlifted to Hospital in Critical Condition After Electrocution in Opa-locka

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A man remains in critical condition after suffering an electrocution while performing yard work Tuesday afternoon in Opa-locka, according to the Opa-locka Police Department.

Emergency responders provided life-saving treatment at the scene before the victim was airlifted to a Miami trauma center. The incident remains under investigation.

What We Know About the Incident

According to the Opa-locka Police Department, officers responded to the 1300 block of Sharar Avenue on August 4, 2026, after receiving a report of a person in distress.

Preliminary investigators reported that:

  • A man was performing yard work in the backyard of a residence.
  • During the work, he accidentally struck a live electrical wire.
  • The man suffered an electrical shock and collapsed.

When officers arrived, they immediately began providing life-saving first aid until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel reached the scene.

The victim was then airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities have not released the man’s identity.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigators may examine:

  • The location of the energized electrical line.
  • Whether the wire was buried or exposed.
  • The type of equipment being used during the yard work.
  • Property maintenance records.
  • Utility infrastructure.
  • Witness statements.
  • Whether any safety violations contributed to the incident.

A complete investigation will help determine exactly how the electrocution occurred.

Electrical Accidents Can Cause Catastrophic Injuries

Contact with energized electrical lines can result in severe or life-threatening injuries, including:

  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Severe burns.
  • Nerve damage.
  • Brain injuries caused by oxygen deprivation.
  • Muscle and tissue damage.
  • Permanent disability.
  • Internal organ injuries.

Even when there are no obvious external injuries, electrical shocks can cause significant internal trauma requiring extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.

A preliminary investigation does not determine civil liability.

Depending on the circumstances, individuals injured in electrical accidents may have legal rights if another party’s negligence contributed to the incident.

Potentially responsible parties could include:

  • Property owners.
  • Utility companies.
  • Contractors.
  • Employers, if the injury occurred during the course of employment.
  • Manufacturers of defective equipment.
  • Other parties responsible for maintaining safe premises or electrical systems.

If negligence is established, an injured victim may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Emergency medical expenses.
  • Hospitalization and surgeries.
  • Future medical treatment.
  • Rehabilitation.
  • Lost wages.
  • Loss of future earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Permanent disability.
  • Other damages available under Florida law.

Every case is unique, and liability depends on the facts established during the investigation.

Preserving Evidence Is Important

Evidence collected immediately following an electrical accident can be critical in determining how the incident occurred.

Important evidence may include:

  • Photographs of the accident scene.
  • The equipment involved.
  • Electrical system inspections.
  • Utility maintenance records.
  • Witness statements.
  • Incident reports.
  • Expert evaluations.
  • Medical records documenting the injuries.

Prompt preservation of this evidence can help investigators identify any hazardous conditions and determine whether negligence contributed to the incident.

Investigation Continues

The Opa-locka Police Department continues to investigate the electrocution on Sharar Avenue.

Additional information regarding the victim’s condition and the cause of the incident may be released as investigators complete their review.

Wishing the Victim a Full Recovery

Electrical accidents can change lives in an instant, often leaving victims and their families facing long recoveries and significant uncertainty. We hope the injured man receives the care he needs and makes a full recovery as authorities work to determine what led to this tragic incident.
