Longtime Orange Park Crossing Guard Seriously Injured After Being Struck Near Grove Park Elementary

A longtime Orange Park crossing guard was hospitalized with serious injuries after she was struck by a vehicle while stopping traffic near Grove Park Elementary School.

Sherri Hamilton, who has served as a crossing guard in the community for more than two decades, was struck Tuesday morning while working on Miller Street. Her family said she suffered injuries to her head, ribs and back and underwent two surgeries following the crash.

Hamilton remained hospitalized and stable as of the latest update, but her family expects her recovery could take months.

What Happened in the Orange Park Crossing Guard Crash?

According to the Orange Park Police Department, Hamilton was actively stopping traffic on Miller Street when a vehicle turning southbound onto Miller Street from Gano Avenue struck her.

Police said Hamilton was wearing a high-visibility traffic vest and holding a stop sign when the collision occurred.

The driver stopped immediately after the crash and is cooperating with investigators. Authorities have not announced any charges or made a determination regarding fault.

Hamilton was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Hamilton Suffered Head, Rib and Back Injuries

Hamilton’s granddaughter, Morgan Dallmann, said her grandmother suffered injuries to her head, ribs and back.

Doctors performed two surgeries as they worked to address swelling in her brain.

Dallmann said Hamilton is now stable but faces what could be a lengthy recovery lasting six months to a year.

The family said it is concentrating on Hamilton’s recovery rather than placing blame on the driver. Dallmann said the family is also praying for the person involved in the collision.

Crossing Guard Has Served Orange Park Community for More Than 20 Years

Hamilton has spent more than two decades helping children safely cross the street outside Grove Park Elementary.

Her family said she knew many of the children and parents personally and could even recognize when one of the students she regularly saw was absent.

Since the crash, support has reportedly poured in from people who remember Hamilton from their own childhoods. Her family said prayer chains have formed across 14 states.

The Orange Park Police Department said Hamilton remained hospitalized and recovering and emphasized the importance of drivers exercising caution around crossing guards.

Students and Staff Offered Counseling After Crash

Clay County District Schools said Hamilton is a crossing guard provided by the Orange Park Police Department.

Following the crash, the district deployed its District Crisis Team and additional counselors to Grove Park Elementary to support students or staff members who witnessed the collision or were otherwise affected by it.

Counseling staff remained available at the school following the incident.
