Lakeland Man Killed in Motorized Scooter Crash on U.S. 301

A 47-year-old Lakeland man was killed Thursday night after an SUV struck the motorized scooter he was operating at an intersection on U.S. 301, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The August 20, 2026 crash occurred at U.S. 301 and County Road 470. Troopers said the scooter was stopped at the intersection when it was struck by a southbound Hyundai SUV.

What Happened in the Fatal U.S. 301 Scooter Crash?

According to FHP, the collision occurred at approximately 10:55 p.m.

The 47-year-old Lakeland man was operating a motorized scooter and was stopped at the intersection of U.S. 301 and County Road 470.

At the same time, an 18-year-old Port Charlotte man was driving a Hyundai SUV southbound on U.S. 301.

Troopers said the SUV driver failed to stop and collided with the scooter.

The scooter operator suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified either driver.

FHP Has Not Announced What Caused the Driver to Fail to Stop

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released information explaining why the SUV driver failed to stop before striking the scooter.

Investigators may examine several factors when determining what led to a rear-end or intersection collision, including:

• Driver distraction
• Vehicle speed
• Following distance
• Visibility and lighting
• Driver fatigue or impairment
• Traffic signals and roadway markings
• Mechanical problems
• Cell phone records, when legally obtainable

There is currently no indication which, if any, of these factors contributed to the crash.

FHP also had not announced any citations or criminal charges in connection with the collision as of the latest report.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash at U.S. 301 and County Road 470.

Authorities have confirmed that a 47-year-old Lakeland man was stopped on a motorized scooter when an SUV driven by an 18-year-old Port Charlotte man failed to stop and struck him. The scooter operator died at the scene.

FHP has not released additional information about contributing factors or announced whether any charges will be filed.
