Lake City Woman Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash on I-10 in Duval County
A 33-year-old Lake City woman died Sunday evening following a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Duval County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred just before 6:45 p.m. on March 9 along Interstate 10 near Baldwin, west of Jacksonville.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the deadly collision.
According to investigators, a 24-year-old driver was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 in a pickup truck when the crash occurred.
Authorities say traffic ahead had slowed or stopped, and two vehicles were already stationary in the roadway:
- A sedan driven by a 33-year-old woman from Lake City
- A pickup truck stopped in front of the sedan
Troopers report that the 24-year-old driver failed to stop in time and rear-ended the sedan.
The force of the impact pushed the sedan forward into the pickup truck ahead of it, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles.
Following the initial collision, the striking pickup truck veered into a guardrail and then struck the left side of the other pickup truck.
The driver of the sedan, the 33-year-old woman from Lake City, died at the scene of the crash, according to troopers.
A 43-year-old man from Lake City who was a passenger in the sedan suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The 24-year-old pickup driver also sustained serious injuries.
Meanwhile, the driver and passenger in the second pickup truck were not injured, authorities said.
Rear-end crashes are one of the most common types of serious collisions on Florida highways. These incidents often occur when drivers fail to recognize slowing or stopped traffic in time to avoid impact.
Common causes of rear-end crashes include:
- Distracted driving
- Following too closely
- Speeding
- Driver fatigue
- Sudden traffic slowdowns or congestion
- Poor visibility or weather conditions
At highway speeds, even a brief moment of inattention can lead to catastrophic chain-reaction crashes involving multiple vehicles.
Potential Legal Liability in Multi-Vehicle Crashes
When a crash involves multiple vehicles, determining liability can require a detailed investigation.
Evidence that may be examined includes:
- Crash reconstruction analysis
- Traffic camera footage
- Vehicle damage patterns
- Witness statements
- Cell phone records in potential distracted driving cases
- Vehicle black-box data
Drivers who fail to maintain a safe following distance or fail to slow for stopped traffic may be found negligent under Florida law.
In fatal crashes, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence contributed to the accident.
Compensation in these cases may help cover damages such as:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical bills incurred before death
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and emotional suffering
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near Baldwin to determine the exact sequence of events and whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.
Tragic crashes like this highlight the importance of remaining attentive and maintaining a safe following distance on busy interstate highways.
