Lake City Woman Killed in Three-Car Crash on I-10 in Jacksonville
A 33-year-old woman from Lake City was killed and two others were seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 6:42 p.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near U.S. Highway 301.
Authorities say the crash involved multiple vehicles and caused significant disruption on the interstate as emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lake City woman was stopped in traffic on Interstate 10 when the collision occurred.
Troopers say a pickup truck driven by a 24-year-old man from St. Johns County was traveling eastbound behind her sedan and failed to stop in time, striking the rear of her vehicle.
The force of the impact caused the woman’s car to:
- Leave the roadway
- Strike a guardrail
- Veer back into the travel lanes
After re-entering the roadway, the sedan collided with a third vehicle traveling along the interstate.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and pronounced the 33-year-old Lake City woman dead.
A 43-year-old man from Lake City who was a passenger in the sedan suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The 24-year-old pickup driver also sustained serious injuries, according to troopers. Investigators noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The occupants of the third vehicle involved in the collision were not injured.
Rear-End Collisions Can Trigger Deadly Chain-Reaction Crashes
Rear-end crashes frequently occur on busy highways when drivers fail to react to slowing or stopped traffic.
These crashes can quickly escalate into multi-vehicle collisions, especially when the initial impact forces vehicles into other lanes or nearby traffic.
Common causes of rear-end crashes include:
- Distracted driving
- Following too closely
- Speeding or aggressive driving
- Driver fatigue
- Failure to anticipate traffic slowdowns
- Poor weather or visibility conditions
When crashes occur at interstate speeds, the resulting force can lead to severe injuries, vehicle rollovers, or fatal outcomes.
Potential Legal Liability in Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Determining fault in a multi-vehicle accident often requires a thorough investigation. Authorities and attorneys may analyze several types of evidence, including:
- Crash reconstruction reports
- Vehicle damage patterns
- Traffic camera footage
- Witness statements
- Cell phone records in potential distracted driving cases
- Vehicle black-box data
Drivers who fail to maintain a safe following distance or fail to stop for traffic may be found negligent under Florida law.
In crashes that result in death, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for damages such as:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs incurred before death
- Loss of financial support
- Emotional suffering and loss of companionship
