Jacksonville Motorcyclist Killed, Woman Critically Injured in Westside Crash
A tragic crash on Jacksonville’s Westside claimed the life of a motorcyclist and left another driver hospitalized in critical condition, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) confirmed Wednesday.
The fatal collision occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Collins Road, when a man in his mid-30s was traveling westbound on a motorcycle. According to police, a woman—also in her mid-30s—was driving southbound and attempted to turn left onto eastbound Collins Road, directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The impact of the crash was severe.
First responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived shortly after the collision and pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene. The woman was transported to the hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
Police noted that the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, a factor that may have influenced the outcome. Investigators are also working to determine whether speed played a role, though no definitive cause has been confirmed.
At this time, no charges have been filed, and police say it’s too early to determine whether the driver who turned in front of the motorcyclist will face legal consequences.
Collins Road remained closed for several hours as JSO’s traffic homicide unit and crash reconstruction experts processed the scene, took witness statements, and gathered evidence.
Legal Rights After a Motorcycle Accident
Unfortunately, collisions like this are becoming more frequent across Florida. When a motorcycle crash results in serious injury or wrongful death, the victims and their families may have legal recourse under Florida personal injury and wrongful death laws.
Drivers who fail to yield the right of way or make unsafe turns can be held civilly liable for the damages they cause, even if criminal charges are not filed. Victims may be entitled to compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Lost income
- Pain and suffering
- Funeral costs (in wrongful death cases)
- Loss of companionship or support
Under Florida Statutes § 768.19, families of deceased motorcyclists can file a wrongful death lawsuit against negligent parties to hold them accountable and secure financial recovery for their loss.
If you or a loved one has been affected by a motorcycle crash, it’s important to speak with an experienced legal team.
