Jacksonville Man Killed in Crash at 103rd Street and I-295 Entrance Ramp, FHP Says

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 50-year-old man from Jacksonville was killed early Monday morning in a crash near the Interstate 295 northbound entrance ramp at 103rd Street, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the fatal collision occurred around 3:35 a.m. when the driver of a sport utility vehicle traveling westbound on 103rd Street allegedly ran a red light and collided with another SUV that was turning left onto the I-295 northbound entrance ramp.

Authorities reported the impact caused the 50-year-old driver’s SUV to rotate and overturn. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second driver, identified as an 18-year-old Jacksonville man, was not injured.

Investigators also stated the deceased driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The tragic collision highlights the serious dangers associated with red-light violations and rollover crashes and raises important legal questions involving traffic safety, negligence, seat belt usage, and wrongful death claims under Florida law.

What We Know About the Fatal Jacksonville Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred early Monday morning at the intersection of 103rd Street and the Interstate 295 northbound entrance ramp.

Investigators say:

  • A 50-year-old man was driving an SUV westbound on 103rd Street
  • The driver allegedly ran a red light
  • The SUV collided with another SUV turning left onto the I-295 northbound ramp
  • The striking SUV rotated and overturned following the impact

Authorities confirmed:

  • The 50-year-old driver died at the scene
  • The 18-year-old driver of the second SUV was not injured

Troopers also reported the deceased driver was not wearing a seat belt.

At this time, officials have not publicly released:

  • Whether speed contributed to the crash
  • Whether impairment played a role
  • Additional details regarding the sequence of events

The crash remains under investigation.

Red-Light Crashes Can Lead to Catastrophic Injuries

Intersection crashes caused by alleged traffic signal violations are among the most dangerous roadway collisions because vehicles frequently collide at high speeds and vulnerable angles.

These crashes may result in:

  • Side-impact collisions
  • Rollovers
  • Ejection risks
  • Fatal blunt force trauma
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries

When vehicles overturn after impact, the risk of catastrophic injury increases significantly.

Seat Belt Usage Plays a Major Role in Crash Survival

The Florida Highway Patrol reported the 50-year-old driver was not wearing a seat belt during the collision.

Seat belts remain one of the most effective safety devices for preventing:

  • Ejections during rollovers
  • Severe head injuries
  • Fatal impact injuries

Under Florida law, drivers and front-seat passengers are generally required to wear seat belts.

While failure to wear a seat belt does not prevent an injured person or family from pursuing legal claims, it may become a factor during civil litigation under Florida’s comparative negligence laws.

Left-Turn and Intersection Crashes Often Require Extensive Investigation

Collisions involving turning vehicles and alleged red-light violations frequently require accident reconstruction analysis.

Investigators may examine:

  • Traffic signal timing
  • Vehicle speeds
  • Witness statements
  • Surveillance footage
  • Tire marks and roadway evidence
  • Electronic vehicle data

At this stage, authorities have not publicly announced whether any additional contributing factors were identified.

Interstate Entrance Ramps and Busy Intersections Can Increase Crash Risks

Intersections near major interstate ramps often experience:

  • Heavy traffic flow
  • Complex turning movements
  • High-speed merging traffic
  • Reduced driver reaction times during overnight hours

Crashes occurring near interstate access points may become particularly severe because vehicles are often accelerating or preparing to merge onto highways.

The collision occurred shortly before 4 a.m., a time when visibility and driver alertness may also become factors.

Potential Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law

The death of the Jacksonville driver may potentially give rise to a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Fla. Stat. § 768.16–768.26, depending on the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Potential wrongful death damages may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Loss of financial support
  • Mental pain and suffering
  • Loss of companionship

Wrongful death claims are generally brought by the personal representative of the deceased person’s estate on behalf of surviving family members.

The Importance of Thorough Fatal Crash Investigations

Fatal rollover crashes often require extensive forensic analysis and evidence preservation.

Investigators may review:

  • Crash scene measurements
  • Vehicle damage patterns
  • Airbag deployment data
  • Electronic control module information
  • Toxicology testing
  • Witness testimony

Prompt investigation is important because physical evidence and electronic data may quickly deteriorate or disappear.

Compassionate Guidance for Families After Fatal Florida Crashes

The deadly crash at 103rd Street and Interstate 295 is another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly serious intersection accidents can result in devastating consequences for Florida families.

For surviving loved ones, the sudden loss of a family member can create overwhelming emotional and financial hardships while investigations continue.

As the Florida Highway Patrol continues investigating the collision, additional details may emerge regarding the factors that contributed to the crash.
