Jackson County Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on U.S. 90, Troopers Say
A fatal crash on U.S. 90 in Jackson County, Florida claimed the life of a motorcyclist Tuesday evening after a pickup truck turned into his path, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident is another tragic reminder of the dangers motorcyclists face on Florida roadways, particularly at intersections.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 6:30 p.m. on April 15, 2026. Investigators say a pickup truck was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 90 from Old U.S. Road when it entered the path of an oncoming motorcycle traveling westbound.
Troopers report that the motorcycle collided with the pickup truck after the turn was made. The motorcyclist, identified only as a Jackson County man, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that his next of kin has been notified.
The crash remains under investigation.
Left-Turn Collisions: A Leading Cause of Motorcycle Fatalities
Crashes involving vehicles turning left in front of motorcycles are among the most common and deadly types of motorcycle accidents.
These collisions often occur because:
- Drivers misjudge the speed or distance of an oncoming motorcycle
- Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than passenger vehicles
- Drivers fail to yield the right-of-way at intersections
- Distracted driving reduces awareness of approaching traffic
Because motorcycles lack the structural protection of cars, these types of crashes frequently result in catastrophic or fatal injuries.
Legal Considerations in Motorcycle Crash Cases
Determining liability in left-turn motorcycle crashes typically involves analyzing whether the turning driver failed to yield the right-of-way.
Potential factors that may be examined include:
- Whether the pickup truck driver had a clear view of oncoming traffic
- Speed and positioning of the motorcycle
- Traffic control devices or signals at the intersection
- Driver attentiveness and reaction time
In many cases, the driver making the left turn may be found at fault for failing to yield.
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation when negligence contributes to a fatal crash.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses incurred prior to death
- Loss of financial support and services
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
A thorough investigation is often critical to determine all contributing factors and sources of liability.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and has not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the collision.
