Injury Crash on I-295 Near San Jose Boulevard Causes Major Delays in Jacksonville

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A crash with injuries caused significant traffic disruptions Thursday morning on Interstate 295 in Jacksonville before crews cleared the scene and reopened all lanes.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on the southbound lanes of I-295 near the San Jose Boulevard area, prompting a large emergency response during the morning commute.

What We Know About the Crash

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred early on July 9, 2026, on I-295 southbound before the San Jose Boulevard exit in Duval County.

Authorities said:

  • The crash involved injuries.
  • Two left lanes were blocked while emergency crews responded.
  • A roadblock and impacts to the express lanes were reported.
  • Emergency vehicles remained on scene while first responders assisted those involved and cleared the roadway.

The crash scene was cleared at approximately 6:30 a.m., allowing traffic to begin moving again.

Additional Delays After the Crash

Although the initial crash had been cleared, traffic continued to move slowly after a van that had been caught in the backup broke down in the inside lane.

The disabled vehicle created additional delays before it was removed and all lanes were reopened.

Officials have not released information regarding:

  • The number of vehicles involved.
  • The severity of the reported injuries.
  • What caused the crash.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision.

Investigators may examine several factors, including:

  • Driver distraction.
  • Following too closely.
  • Unsafe lane changes.
  • Excessive speed.
  • Roadway conditions.
  • Vehicle mechanical issues.
  • Witness statements and physical evidence.

No citations or criminal charges have been announced.

Florida Traffic Laws That May Apply

Because the investigation remains active, no determination of fault has been made.

Depending on the evidence, investigators may consider whether violations of Florida traffic laws contributed to the collision, including:

  • Florida Statute §316.1925, governing careless driving.
  • Florida Statute §316.0895, requiring drivers to maintain a safe following distance.
  • Florida Statute §316.089, requiring motorists to remain within a single lane until it is safe to change lanes.
  • Florida Statute §316.183, requiring drivers to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for existing roadway conditions.

Any determination regarding liability will depend on the findings of the investigation.

Individuals injured in a motor vehicle collision caused by another driver’s negligence may have legal options under Florida law.

Depending on the circumstances, an injured person may be able to recover compensation for:

  • Medical expenses.
  • Lost income.
  • Future medical care.
  • Pain and suffering, when permitted under Florida law.
  • Property damage.

Because multi-vehicle interstate crashes can involve several contributing factors, a thorough investigation is often necessary to determine liability.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the injury crash on Interstate 295 near San Jose Boulevard.

Additional information regarding the cause of the collision and the extent of the reported injuries may be released as the investigation progresses.

Traffic backups following a collision can increase the risk of secondary crashes. Drivers approaching slowed or stopped traffic should reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance, and remain alert for emergency responders and disabled vehicles.

Our thoughts are with everyone involved, and we hope those injured in the crash make a full recovery.
