Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A girl was hospitalized Thursday evening following a golf cart crash in Cutler Bay that caused the vehicle to overturn, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports of a crash involving a golf cart in a residential area. The child was transported to a local hospital as authorities began investigating what caused the vehicle to flip.

The incident remains under investigation.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of Southwest 89th Avenue and Southwest 206th Street in Cutler Bay.

Authorities reported that:

  • A golf cart was involved in the crash.

Investigation Ongoing

At this time, investigators have not disclosed:

  • How many occupants were inside the golf cart
  • Whether another vehicle was involved
  • What caused the golf cart to overturn
  • Whether any traffic violations occurred
  • The condition of the injured child

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office continues to gather evidence and determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

Golf Cart Accidents Can Cause Serious Injuries

Although golf carts are often viewed as low-speed vehicles, accidents involving golf carts can result in significant injuries, particularly when the vehicle overturns.

Unlike passenger vehicles, most golf carts do not offer:

  • Enclosed passenger compartments
  • Airbags
  • Advanced crash protection systems
  • Side-impact protection

When a golf cart rolls over, occupants may be thrown from the vehicle or pinned beneath it.

Common injuries associated with golf cart crashes include:

  • Head injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Neck and back injuries
  • Lacerations and abrasions

Children are often especially vulnerable because of their smaller size and limited ability to brace during a crash.

Florida Laws Regarding Golf Cart Operation

Florida law regulates where and how golf carts may be operated.

Under Florida Statute §316.212, golf carts generally may only be operated on designated roadways and areas where local governments permit their use.

Additionally, operators must follow applicable traffic laws and exercise reasonable care to avoid collisions and injuries.

Depending on the circumstances of a crash, investigators may examine:

  • Whether the golf cart was being lawfully operated
  • The age and qualifications of the driver
  • Vehicle maintenance and condition
  • Roadway design and conditions
  • Potential driver negligence

Authorities have not indicated that any violations occurred in this incident.

Potential Liability Following a Golf Cart Crash

While investigators have not determined the cause of the crash, golf cart accidents can sometimes involve questions of liability.

Depending on the facts, investigators and insurance carriers may examine whether injuries resulted from:

  • Negligent operation of the golf cart
  • Dangerous roadway conditions
  • Mechanical defects or equipment failures
  • Improper maintenance
  • Negligent supervision of minors
  • Unsafe modifications to the vehicle

Florida law generally allows injured individuals to pursue compensation when another party’s negligence contributes to an accident.

However, no findings of fault or liability have been announced in this case.

Safety Considerations for Golf Cart Operators

Safety experts recommend several precautions to reduce the risk of golf cart accidents:

  • Avoid sharp turns at excessive speeds
  • Ensure all occupants remain seated while the vehicle is moving
  • Follow roadway rules and local regulations
  • Maintain tires, brakes, and steering systems
  • Closely supervise child passengers
  • Avoid overloading the vehicle

Many rollover incidents occur when golf carts make sudden turns, travel on uneven terrain, or are operated beyond their intended capacity.

Investigation Continues

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office remains the lead agency investigating the crash.

Officials have not released additional information regarding the child’s condition or whether any charges or citations are anticipated.

As investigators continue reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses, additional details may become available.
