Florida Woman Seriously Injured After Brightline Train Collides with Vehicle in Fort Lauderdale

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A woman suffered serious injuries after her vehicle was struck by a Brightline train at a railroad crossing in Fort Lauderdale late Sunday night, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine what caused the vehicle to enter the crossing before the collision.

What We Know About the Crash

According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the crash occurred shortly before midnight on July 26, 2026, at the Brightline railroad crossing on Sunrise Boulevard.

Authorities reported that the woman’s vehicle was struck by a Brightline train and dragged several hundred feet before coming to rest near the 400 block of Northeast Flagler Drive.

Surveillance video captured the train dragging the vehicle along the tracks as sparks flew from the collision.

Despite the severity of the crash, the woman was able to exit the vehicle on her own before emergency responders arrived.

Firefighters located her on the ground beside the vehicle and transported her to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials have not publicly released her identity.

Witnesses Describe the Aftermath

Several witnesses described the dramatic moments surrounding the collision.

One witness, Victor Carvalho, told local media that he immediately called 911 before climbing over a fence to assist the injured driver.

According to Carvalho, he observed the railroad crossing gates lowering as the vehicle entered the crossing.

He described the woman’s injuries as severe, stating that one of her arms appeared badly injured and that she suffered significant facial trauma.

Another witness expressed surprise that the driver survived such a violent collision.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Authorities have not yet determined:

  • Why the vehicle entered the railroad crossing.
  • Whether mechanical issues played a role.
  • Whether driver distraction or impairment contributed.
  • Whether the crossing signals were functioning properly.
  • The speed of the train at the time of impact.

As part of the investigation, officials may review:

  • Railroad crossing signal data.
  • Surveillance camera footage.
  • Event recorder information from the train.
  • Vehicle inspections.
  • Witness statements.
  • Physical evidence at the scene.
  • Train crew statements.
  • Accident reconstruction findings.

A complete investigation will help determine exactly how the collision occurred.

Railroad Crossing Collisions Can Cause Catastrophic Injuries

Collisions involving passenger trains are often among the most severe transportation accidents because trains require significant distances to stop and cannot quickly avoid obstacles on the tracks.

Investigators commonly examine factors such as:

  • Operation of crossing gates and warning signals.
  • Driver visibility.
  • Vehicle positioning on the tracks.
  • Driver distraction.
  • Mechanical failures.
  • Roadway design.
  • Human factors affecting driver decision-making.

Brightline also reminded motorists that it is both dangerous and illegal to drive around lowered crossing gates and emphasized the importance of crossing tracks only when there is sufficient room to completely clear the crossing.

A preliminary investigation does not determine civil liability.

Depending on the evidence developed during the investigation, injured victims may have the right to pursue compensation if another party’s negligence caused or contributed to the collision.

Potentially responsible parties could include:

  • A negligent driver.
  • A governmental entity responsible for roadway or crossing maintenance, where permitted under Florida law.
  • A railroad operator, if evidence demonstrates negligence.
  • A manufacturer if a mechanical defect contributed to the incident.
  • Other parties whose negligence played a role.

Potential compensation may include:

  • Emergency medical expenses.
  • Hospitalization and surgery.
  • Rehabilitation.
  • Future medical treatment.
  • Lost wages.
  • Loss of future earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Permanent disability or disfigurement.
  • Other damages available under Florida law.

Every railroad crossing accident is unique, and legal responsibility depends on the evidence established during the investigation.

Preserving Evidence Is Critical

Evidence collected immediately following a train collision can be essential in determining exactly what occurred.

Important evidence may include:

  • Train event recorder data.
  • Railroad crossing signal records.
  • Surveillance and onboard camera footage.
  • Vehicle Event Data Recorder (“black box”) information.
  • Witness statements.
  • Police reports.
  • Vehicle inspections.
  • Accident reconstruction analyses.

Prompt preservation of this evidence can help investigators accurately reconstruct the collision and identify all contributing factors.

Investigation Continues

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department continues investigating the Brightline train collision on Sunrise Boulevard.

Additional information regarding the cause of the crash and the injured woman’s condition may be released as investigators complete their review.

Train collisions can result in devastating injuries in a matter of seconds. We hope the woman injured in this crash makes a full recovery and that the ongoing investigation provides clear answers about the circumstances that led to this frightening incident.
