Florida Man Accused of Fatally Shooting Ex-Girlfriend at Her Workplace, Wounding Coworker
A devastating act of workplace violence and domestic-related homicide has shaken the Bradenton community after police say a man executed his ex-girlfriend at point-blank range inside her place of employment — seriously injuring another woman in the process.
According to the Bradenton Police Department, the shooting occurred around 12:48 p.m. Thursday inside a medical and office complex located in the 5200 block of 4th Avenue Circle East.
Police allege that Keith Roberts Jr., 29, entered the office suite through an unlocked door, went directly to the desk where his ex-girlfriend, Myshaela Burnham, 29, was seated, and opened fire at point-blank range.
- Myshaela Burnham was fatally shot and pronounced dead.
- A female coworker, who was seated at an adjoining desk and witnessed the shooting, was also struck by gunfire and remains hospitalized. Her name has not been released.
Bradenton Police Chief Jason Cramer confirmed that Roberts appeared to know exactly where Burnham worked and where she was seated inside the office.
“He walked in an unlocked door and went directly to the desk where the victim was… and directly opened fire at point blank range,” Cramer said. “Some of it hit the other victim who was at an adjoining desk.”
Multiple 911 callers reported a vehicle fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. Investigators quickly identified the car and tracked it as it traveled toward the DeSoto Bridge.
Police say Roberts was taken into custody in Palmetto within approximately 25 minutes of the shooting. He later agreed to speak with detectives from the Manatee Homicide Investigation Unit and was formally arrested shortly before 6 p.m. that same day.
Roberts now faces the following charges:
- First-degree murder with a firearm
- Attempted first-degree murder with a firearm
According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Roberts is currently being held at the Manatee County Jail without bond. The investigation remains ongoing.
This case highlights a deeply troubling and increasingly common reality: domestic violence does not always stay within the home. When abusive relationships escalate, workplaces can become targets — especially when access is unrestricted.
Factors that often contribute to these tragedies include:
- Prior relationship conflicts or breakups
- Knowledge of the victim’s daily routine and workplace
- Lack of security or access control in office buildings
- Absence of restraining orders or enforceable safety plans
In many workplace shooting cases, the attacker is someone known to the victim, not a random intruder.
Legal Rights of Victims and Families
When a fatal workplace shooting occurs, surviving families and injured victims may have multiple legal avenues beyond the criminal case, including potential civil claims.
Depending on the circumstances, these may include:
- Wrongful death claims on behalf of the deceased victim
- Personal injury claims for the surviving coworker
- Negligent security claims if the building lacked reasonable safety measures
- Premises liability claims against property owners or management
- Claims related to failure to control access, warn occupants, or respond to known threats
While no lawsuit can undo the harm, civil actions can help families secure:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs
- Lost income and future support
- Pain and suffering
- Accountability for safety failures that allowed the attack to occur
