Fiery Crash in Suntree Leaves Driver Dead After SUV Veers Off Wickham Road

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A driver was killed Thursday morning after a single-vehicle crash in the Suntree area of Brevard County that left an SUV engulfed in flames, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 11:46 a.m. on March 5 near the intersection of Wickham Road and Forest Lake Drive.

According to investigators, a 2024 Ford Escape was traveling westbound on north Wickham Road when the vehicle suddenly veered off the roadway to the right.

Troopers reported that the SUV:

  • Struck a traffic control sign
  • Collided with a tree near the roadway
  • Became engulfed in flames after the impact

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the driver was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim. The medical examiner’s office will confirm the driver’s identity before it is made public.

The crash remains under investigation.

Although this crash involved only one vehicle, investigators will still work to determine what caused the driver to lose control.

Factors often examined in single-vehicle crashes include:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Mechanical failures
  • Tire blowouts
  • Driver distraction
  • Speed or impairment
  • Roadway hazards

Crash reconstruction specialists may review vehicle damage, skid marks, and roadway conditions to determine the sequence of events leading up to the collision.

While many single-vehicle crashes are caused by driver error, other factors may sometimes contribute to these tragic incidents.

Possible liability issues investigators may explore include:

  • Dangerous roadway conditions
  • Missing or damaged guardrails
  • Defective vehicle components
  • Tire failures or manufacturing defects

In certain cases, third parties such as vehicle manufacturers, maintenance providers, or government entities responsible for roadway safety may share liability if negligence contributed to the crash.

When a fatal accident occurs, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence by another party contributed to the crash.

Compensation in these cases may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical costs prior to death
  • Loss of financial support
  • Loss of companionship and protection
  • Emotional pain and suffering

A thorough investigation is often necessary to determine whether external factors played a role in a fatal crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash on Wickham Road near Forest Lake Drive in Suntree.
