Fiery Atlantic Boulevard Crash in Jacksonville Leaves Three Dead, Four Injured
A devastating four-vehicle crash on Atlantic Boulevard in Jacksonville left three people dead and four others injured Sunday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Atlantic Boulevard over Little Pottsburg Creek and resulted in a massive emergency response and hours-long road closures.
Investigators say a westbound Infiniti sedan, driven by a teenager, crossed over the median and entered the eastbound lanes of traffic.
As a result, three eastbound vehicles — two SUVs and one sedan — became involved in a chain-reaction crash.
According to the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department, two of the vehicles caught fire following the impact.
Atlantic Boulevard was shut down from Empire Point to University Boulevard for several hours while first responders worked to extinguish the flames, treat victims, and investigate the scene.
Authorities confirmed that:
- All three occupants of one SUV died at the scene
- Two men in the second SUV suffered life-threatening injuries
- A woman in her 50s driving the eastbound sedan sustained non-life-threatening injuries
- The teenage driver of the Infiniti was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Traffic Homicide investigators are working to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the crash.
At this time, it is unclear whether criminal charges will be filed against the teenage driver.
Legal Implications in Median-Crossing Crashes
Crashes involving vehicles crossing medians into oncoming traffic are often among the most catastrophic due to:
- High combined speeds
- Limited reaction time for oncoming drivers
- Risk of head-on or near head-on impacts
- Secondary collisions involving multiple vehicles
In Florida, drivers who cross into opposing lanes may be held civilly liable if negligence contributed to the crash. Potential factors investigators may examine include:
- Speed
- Distracted driving
- Mechanical failure
- Roadway design
- Impairment
When fatalities occur, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
Potential Civil Claims After a Fatal Crash
In a case involving multiple vehicles and fatalities, liability may extend beyond a single driver depending on the facts. Civil claims may allow families to recover damages for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs prior to death
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
For injured survivors, claims may include compensation for:
- Emergency and long-term medical treatment
- Lost income
- Permanent disability
- Pain and suffering
Because this crash involved a teenage driver and multiple vehicles, a thorough crash reconstruction and investigation into all contributing factors will be critical.
